Appeal against an educational decision
  ACE - Advice
This page links to downloadable booklets and information sheets on topics such as: school exclusion; getting extra help; statementing procedures; tackling bullying. There are details of the ACE helpline as well as a set of FAQ's. 
  
  DfES - LEA Contact Details
Use this service from the Department for Education and Skills to find the details of your Local Education Authority. You can either type in a search, see a full list or browse alphabetically. 
  
  DfES - Parents' Centre
Provides the information you need to appeal against decisions such as school placements, special educational needs decisions, school exclusions and exam results. Straightforward and clear, with links to good information on other topics. 
  
  Legal Services Commission - Education
An online leaflet explaining what you and your child can expect from a school and your local education authority. Covers some of the main aspects of the law in relation to your child's education, including absences, discipline and exclusions. 
  
  LGO - England
Investigates complaints of injustice arising from maladministration by local authorities and certain other bodies. This is the site for the three ombudsmen in England. It has downloadable documents about making a complaint, including a complaint form. 
  
  LGO - Northern Ireland
Investigate complaints from people who have suffered personal injustice through maladministration by Northern Ireland government departments, agencies, public and local bodies and the Health and Personal Social Services. This site is very informative. 
  
  LGO - Scotland
The site of the Ombudsman in Scotland. If you think you have been unfairly treated by your local council, you can complain to the Ombudsman. This site gives contact details and information about making a complaint. 
  
  LGO - Wales
Investigates complaints by the public that maladministration by local authorities in Wales has caused them to suffer injustice, or that members of local authorities in Wales have failed to comply with their authority's code of conduct.

  DfES - Governors
Here you can find out who can be a school governor, what governors do and how to apply to be one yourself. School governors have responsibility for the way the school conducts its business and for maintaining good standards of education. 
  
  DfES - Parent Governors Reps
This site gives information about elected parent governor representatives having a place on LEA education committees. Learn about the system and get in touch with your local parent governor representative through the contacts list. 
  
  NCPTA
PTA's provide a partnership between home and school. They are a good means of getting to know other parents, and meeting staff in another setting. This site is the umbrella organisation supporting all the PTAs in the UK.

  ATL
The Association for Teachers and Lecturers is a professional association and trade union representing over 160,000 teachers, lecturers and education support staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. 
  
  Education International
This is a world-wide trade union organisation of education personnel, representing all sectors of education from pre-school to university. It links with trade unions and associations in 159 countries. 
  
  ETUCE
This is the site of the European Trade Union Committee for Education. This body represents 81 teachers' unions in 19 European Union and EFTA countries. ETUCE also has associated member organisations in Central and Eastern European countries. 
  
  NAHT
The site of the National Association of Head Teachers. Full of news, reports, training developments etc. 
  
  NASUWT
The site of the National Association of School Masters/ Union of Women Teachers. Contains news, reports, advice, campaigns etc. 
  
  NUT
This is the site of the National Union of Teachers. All the latest news, pay and conditions, details of how to join, what a union rep does, campaigns and conferences. 
  
  PAT
This is the site of the Professional Association of Teachers. It has separate sections for Professionals Allied to Teaching ( PatT) and for nursery nurses, nannies and other child carers (PANN). 
  
  SHA
The site of the Secondary Heads Association, for members of the leadership team in secondary schools and colleges.

  DfES – Examination Services
This site gives details of all the awarding bodies for school-based qualifications. Find out full details about exam curricula, timetables, special concessions etc by following links from this site. 
  
  General Teaching Council - England
This statutory body advises government on policy issues and regulates the teaching profession to guarantee high professional standards. It sets standards for teaching and teacher training and holds a register of qualified teachers. 
  
  OFSTED
Education Watchdog - the people who do school inspections. If you want to find out about a school's performance, this is the primary resource. 
  
  Qualifications and Curriculum Authority
This is the body responsible for standards in education and training. It oversees the maintenance and development of the school curriculum and associated assessments, and it accredits and monitors qualifications in schools, colleges and at work. 
  
Get legal advice
  Compact Law
A very good UK based legal portal that offers free advice and information about a very wide range of different situations. The site is organised into categories within which there is a wealth of relevant and up to date information. Well worth a look. 
  
  Law on the Web
This is an excellent legal portal that provides free advice and information in a very wide range of different categories. From here you can also access a number of other very good legal sites. Law on the Web is well written, comprehensive and very useful. 
  
  Legal Advice Free
As the name implies, this site offers free legal advice and links on a wide range of different topics. The advice is usually up to date and whilst it is no substitute for personal advice from a solicitor it can be a very useful guide to where you stand. 
  
  NACAB
This is a great website that offers a fantastic service. You can use this site to find out where you nearest citizens advice bureau is and use it to get advice about all sorts of things. There is also information about a range of related issues. 
  
  The Community Legal Service
The CLS was set up by the government in order to try and ensure that people can get information and help about their legal rights and understand how to enforce them in the right place and at the right time. A very useful site that can be of great use. 
  
Know your children's rights
  Advisory Centre for Education
The ACE is an organisation that offers advice and information to parents on a number of state education issues such as exclusion, bullying, special educational needs and school admission appeals. A very valuable resource. 
  
  ARCH
This is a non profit making organisation that is dedicated to promoting the child's rights to have their views on education heard under the UN convention on the rights of the child. Contains information about education and some good links. 
  
  Children's Express - Children's Rights
This is an archive of stories written by young people about various issues surrounding children's rights. They provide a different perspective on a number of issues and provide an opportunity to let children have their say on this most relevant of topics. 
  
  Children's Legal Centre
An organisation funded by the government that exists to provide a free and confidential legal advice and information service covering all aspects of law and policy affecting children and young people. 
  
  Right Online
This is an excellent section of the Save the Children website that clearly details what rights children (anyone under 18) have according to the United Nations convention on the rights of the child. Informative, straightforward and easy to understand.
