Here you can find out who can be a school governor, what governors do and how to apply to be one yourself. School governors have responsibility for the way the school conducts its business and for maintaining good standards of education. 
  
  DfES - Parent Governors Reps
This site gives information about elected parent governor representatives having a place on LEA education committees. Learn about the system and get in touch with your local parent governor representative through the contacts list. 
  
  NCPTA
PTA's provide a partnership between home and school. They are a good means of getting to know other parents, and meeting staff in another setting. This site is the umbrella organisation supporting all the PTAs in the UK.

This site gives details of all the awarding bodies for school-based qualifications. Find out full details about exam curricula, timetables, special concessions etc by following links from this site. 
  
  Education and Skills Select Committee
This is the site of the House of Commons Select Committee that examines the expenditure, administration and policy of the DfES and its associated public bodies. Find reports of hearings by following links on this page. 
  
  General Teaching Council - England
This statutory body advises government on policy issues and regulates the teaching profession to guarantee high professional standards. It sets standards for teaching and teacher training and holds a register of qualified teachers. 
  
  OFSTED
Education Watchdog - the people who do school inspections. If you want to find out about a school's performance, this is the primary resource. 
  
  Qualifications and Curriculum Authority
This is the body responsible for standards in education and training. It oversees the maintenance and development of the school curriculum and associated assessments, and it accredits and monitors qualifications in schools, colleges and at work.

  Ace Centre
Provides information about communication and educational technology for young people with physical and communication difficulties and a range of services including individual assessments, information, and specialist training for parents and professionals. 
  
  Connexions
This site will tell you all you want to know about the Connexions service which gives advice and guidance to 13 – 19 year olds throughout England. There is a section for parents, and you can find out details of your local Connexions Service. 
  
  DfES – Parents Gateway
This section of the government’s DfES site links parents to lots of information and advice about aspects of education and schools. There is information about government policies, news about education, help with tackling problems etc. 
  
  DfES - Special Educational Needs
This is the part of the DfES site that is about Special Needs in education. There are lots of very informative downloadable documents and articles on this site, for teachers, parents and LEAs. 
  
  NASEN
This site is mainly for members of the National Association of Special Educational Needs, but there is some interesting information and links for non-members as well. The site contains many policy documents, details of professional training etc. 
  
  RNIB – Education
This is the part of the Royal National Institute for the Blind’s website that gives information about education. There is information here about the RNIB’s educational services for children, families and professionals. 
  
  Scottish Sensory Centre
On this site you will find lots of education-related information of use to young people in Scotland with visual impairments or deafness. Links to online resources for communications and visual impairment, publications and a sensory information database.

  Advice Guide
Advice Guide gives you basic advice and information on your rights. It can provide you with a broad outline of where you stand and what you can do. Excellent as a first step in understanding your rights. 
  
  Compact Law
A very good UK based legal portal that offers free advice and information about a very wide range of different situations. The site is organised into categories within which there is a wealth of relevant and up to date information. Well worth a look.

This is an excellent legal portal that provides free advice and information in a very wide range of different categories. From here you can also access a number of other very good legal sites. Law on the Web is well written, comprehensive and very useful. 
  
  NACAB
This is a great website that offers a fantastic service. You can use this site to find out where you nearest citizens advice bureau is and use it to get advice about all sorts of things. There is also information about a range of related issues. 
  
  The Community Legal Service
The CLS was set up by the government in order to try and ensure that people can get information and help about their legal rights and understand how to enforce them in the right place and at the right time. A very useful site that can be of great use. 
  
Get support for special educational needs
  Ability Hub
This site gives information about assistive technology for people with a disability who find operating a computer difficult or impossible. This web site will direct you to adaptive equipment and alternative methods available for accessing computers. 
  
  Ability Net
This site gives lots of free information and advice on adapting and using computers if you have a disability. There is also information about its many other advice, assessment, training and consultancy services. 
  
  DFES - Support
This part of the Department for Education and Skills site contains information about financial support for students with disabilities. 
  
  IPSEA
This is the site of the Independent Panel for Special Educational Advice. This site is full of very useful information for parents of children with special educational needs, about getting support in the education system. 
  
  Skill
This is the website of the national bureau for students with disabilities. They promote opportunities and support for young people and adults (and their families) with any kind of disability in post-16 education, training and employment across the UK. 
  
Know your children's rights
  Advisory Centre for Education
The ACE is an organisation that offers advice and information to parents on a number of state education issues such as exclusion, bullying, special educational needs and school admission appeals. A very valuable resource. 
  
  ARCH
This is a non profit making organisation that is dedicated to promoting the child's rights to have their views on education heard under the UN convention on the rights of the child. Contains information about education and some good links. 
  
  Children's Legal Centre
An organisation funded by the government that exists to provide a free and confidential legal advice and information service covering all aspects of law and policy affecting children and young people. 
  
  Right Online
This is an excellent section of the Save the Children website that clearly details what rights children (anyone under 18) have according to the United Nations convention on the rights of the child. Informative, straightforward and easy to understand.

  Go Petition
Create a petition online on pretty much anything you want. This site has a specific UK section but also has other global areas so you can reach people all over the world. You can get help with creating petitions and managing any petitions that you start.

A good site that lets you set up petitions with potentially unlimited reach, on almost any issue. You will get help managing any petitions that you create and you can read or sign any other petitions that exist on the site.

A large range of different petitions to read and sign, covering loads of different environmental, political and human rights issues. An interesting site.
