This is a searchable database of a huge range of courses, short or long, full or part time, degree and HND. It is a very thorough site for finding courses in colleges and universities all over the UK, as long as they have registered with ‘Hot Courses.’ 
  
  ICDL - IT Courses
This is the section of the International Centre for Distance Learning site that will take you to IT courses that are offered via distance learning from institutions all around the world. There are courses here on all aspects of IT at different levels. 
  
  IT Distance Learning
This site provides a large range of certified IT courses available online. It also gives suggestions for funding. A good place to start looking to develop your career in IT. 
  
  Learn Direct
Learn Direct is a good place to find information about a wide range of online learning opportunities. You can find out how and where you can study, get advice on choosing the right course and get business advice. A useful site with lots to offer. 
  
  The Interface Group
This group offers a range of certified IT Training courses including classroom based instructor-led courses or self-study Internet Interactive and Boot Camp courses. They also run training to be an IT trainer.

A free technical support website that has a team of over 250 experts who can help you out with a huge range of computer problems. There are loads of categories of advice and information as well as a live support chat room, a forum and email help. 
  
  All Experts - Computing
A free question and answer service in which you can contact a large number of different experts, who offer help in a range of computing categories. Includes networking, programming, operating systems and common software and hardware products. 
  
  Annoyances
A site all about the problems with Microsoft Windows written by real users. A brilliant place to find useful and detailed information written by people who have experienced the problems and bugs first hand. A great site and a fantastic resource. 
  
  AskMe - Computing and the Web
AskMe is a good place to find useful advice and information on a massive range of issues. This is their computing section, where you can find everything from beginners guides to expert help on some very advanced topics. Simple to use and very informative. 
  
  Computing.Net
This site contains some excellent support forums where you can find help with any computing problems you might have. The site is very popular and because of this, you will find some very good advice from a wide range of people. Very useful and simple. 
  
  Experts Exchange
An excellent source of free information that covers pretty much every IT support topic. A lot of the information you will find is pretty advanced but it is easy to post your question and get help from lots of people who really know their stuff.

A large and well established site that offers free help in a number of different areas. Each section contains a lot of different resources including a lot of links to some very useful sites and documents outlining tips, tricks and helpful information. 
  
  Microsoft Support
A tremendously useful site for helping you to solve any problems you have with Microsoft products. There is a huge amount of information available here, searchable in a a number of different ways. You can also download upgrades and use discussion forums. 
  
  PC Pages
A very good UK based directory of useful information and practical advice about computer hardware and software. Loads of different sections covering all the essentials as well as a lot of links to some good places to find free software and good deals. 
  
  PC Pitstop
A site full of small tweaks and tips for your PC that can help you get the best from your machine. There are several small tests available that perform diagnostic tests on your PC and give you easy to understand information about any potential problems. 
  
Find teaching and learning resources
  BECTA
The site of the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency. On this site you’ll find out all the latest information and initiatives about the use of educational technology in schools, further education and the community and some good links. 
  
  Net Learn
This site provides teaching and learning resources for internet studies. Materials may be web-based, available by email, downloadable or non-computer-based. Also special resources, eg for visually impaired people. 
  
  NISS - Computing Resources
This is a database of networked computing resources. Probably more than you will ever need. Very large with loads of useful links under a wide range of topics. 
  
  Open University – Materials
This page shows all the resources that can be bought from the Open University, on Computing topics. If you enrol on a course you get them free. 
  
  Science Net – Computing Questions
This page is a list of basic questions about computing, and some answers. Questions range from ‘What is netiquette?’ to ‘Who invented the floppy disk?’ Simple but interesting and could solve a problem for you. 
  
  Training Zone – IT
The Training Zone is a substantial resource for trainers. This section is the start of a new zone specially dedicated to IT trainers and offering resources on a growing number of IT topics.

  BUBL
BUBL is an amazing and little known resource. It contains selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas. There is a truly massive amount of brilliant information that can be found here and you can either search categories or journals. 
  
  The Internet Public Library
The Internet Public Library is an excellent resource. It is one of the first libraries for the internet community and is intended to discover the best ways for librarians to contribute to the web. There is a huge amount of information accessible here. 
  
  UK Higher Education Libraries
This site contains links to all of the university and research libraries in the UK, listed alphabetically. Most of these have searchable catalogues and will be extremely helpful in finding the source you need. 
  
  WWW Virtual Library
This is one of the first online libraries of the web. Each category is maintained by someone who has a level of expertise in that area and this has led to the content being fairly comprehensive and wide ranging. An excellent way to find relevant websites.

This site offers a free service to allow you to compare the prices of books, DVDs, Videos and music, including the postage charge. A hugely useful way of finding out if you are getting the best deal. 
  
  Amazon
Amazon has now become more than just a cheap online book dealer, it now sells a huge range pf products and is generally reliable and quick to deliver. One of the best shops for sheer choice but not always the best for price. Always worth a look. 
  
  Book Brain
This site provides a comparison of prices of books from a wide range of online bookshops, so you are likely to get a bargain every time you buy. If you visit any of these dealers through one of the links provided, a percentage of sales goes to charity. 
  
Read a magazine
  Magatopia
This site provides access to a huge number of the online versions of well known magazines. Although it’s not a very nicely designed site, it covers a lot of different categories and can help you find the official sites of your favourite magazines. 
  
  PC Advisor
A magazine that bills itself as 'Expert advice in plain english' and this seems to sum up their site rather well. Register for the site (for free) and you can take advantage of a number of helpful features all aimed at helping you with your PC. 
  
  Personal Computer World
This is the online version of the popular PC World magazine. It is full of reviews and features to keep you up to date with all that’s new in the world of personal computing. Good for current software and hardware reviews. 
  
  Subscription
A fantastic site where you can subscribe online to most of the UK's major magazines. It's simple to use and ordering is secure and your subscription will be processed quickly. A good site that makes subscriptions a doddle. 
  
  WH Smith
WH Smith are responsible for selling a massive number of magazines and books in the UK and their website is a good place to buy them online, in addition to a range of music, films and games. Particularly good for magazines. 
  
Understand file extensions
  Filext
This brilliant little site allows you to understand the meaning of all the file extensions (.mpg .mdb etc.) that your computer can produce. This can also allow you to discover what program you may need to view these files.
