1. Basic
Navigation of 1DO3
- How to find websites using
1DO3
Finding useful websites using 1DO3 can be done
in just 3 clicks of a mouse. This process is outlined
below:
- When you first arrive at the site you will see a list of
subjects across the screen such as 'Leisure and Arts' or 'Sport'. You should click on
the subject that best covers what it is that you want to do
using the Internet.
Because people think differently,
the same action is often represented under several different
categories. For example 'Book tickets' appears under both
'Leisure and Arts' and 'Shopping'. This list of subjects appears
at the top of every page of 1DO3 so no matter where you are in
the site, you can go straight to a new subject without having to
go back to this starting page. However, if you ever want to
return to this first page, you can click on 'Home' at any time.
You can also get back to the front page at any time by clicking
on the 1DO3 logo.
- Once you have clicked on a subject you will see a list of
things that you can do will appear on the left hand side of the
screen under the heading 'What do you want to do?' On the main
part of the screen you will see a list of the five most popular
sites in that subject area. Clicking on one of these sites will
take you straight there. If you click on one of the actions from
the list on the right hand side you will see that the main part
of the screen changes to show a list of websites that are
relevant to your chosen action.
The websites are
organised by sub-headings to help you decide on the most
relevant and useful site. Each of these sites also has a
description to help you make a decision about whether the site
is useful to you without you having to take the time to actually
go there.
- Your third click will be on one of the websites from the
list on the main part of the screen. The website you have chosen
will then be displayed. It will be displayed under a 1DO3 banner
across the top of the screen (see below for more information
about using the functions on this banner).
If at any
time you wish to go back to the first page, you can do so by
clicking on 'Home', which appears on every page of 1DO3 and the
banner above all the websites.
- Searching 1DO3
1DO3 includes an
intelligent search facility that can help you to find relevant
actions and websites contained within the site. You should note
that this function is not an internet search and is intended to
get you to a relevant section of 1DO3 rather than provide
information from the web.
Using the search is as easy as
typing in what it is that you want to achieve on the web. Often
the most effective technique is to state the action in full as
opposed to writing in a series of keywords. For example 'buy a
car' will provide more focused results than typing in 'cars'.
When you search 1DO3, the results that are shown in the
list on the left of the screen are the actions that contain the
websites most likely to be able to help you accomplish your task.
Occasionally, a result will appear in green. These are the most
relevant results and you should click on those first. If your
search is unsuccessful, you will be given the option to try
Google, and clicking on this option will take you to Google's
results for your search term.
- Using the 1DO3 Banner
The banner
that is displayed above each of the websites has a number of
features to allow you to get to different parts of 1DO3 in an
efficient and straightforward way, and without having to go back
through all the pages you have previously visited.
On the
banner you will see a drop-down menu with the name of your current
site displayed. If you click the arrow at the side of the menu you
will see a list of the other websites that are contained in your
chosen action. A click on any of the website names on this menu
will take you straight there without having to go back to the
previous page of 1DO3.
Please note that some websites are
designed in such a way that we are forced to open them in a new
browser window on your screen. In these cases, you will still see
the banner but if you wish to completely exit that site, you will
have to close the window that it appears in. To the left of the
drop down menu of websites, you will see the name of the area of
1DO3 that you are in. For example '1DO3 > Travel > Buy a
bike'. In this instance, clicking on the word '1DO3' will take you
straight back to the front page of the website, clicking on
'Travel' will take you back to the main 'Travel' page of 1DO3 and
clicking on the words 'Buy a Bike' will take you straight back to
the 'Buy a bike' page of the 'Travel' section.
- CallCodes
CallCodes are
reference numbers that uniquely identify a subject, action or
website in our database. The CallCode box on most 1DO3 pages is a
convenient place to enter such numbers to quickly access a
particular area of the site. For example BBC News is 020801 so by
typing that number into the CallCode box you are very quickly
taken directly to your required page.
The CallCode for each
area of the site is displayed in the CallCode box at the top of
the screen. As an added function, you can type CallCodes direct
into the Address Bar of your browser on the end of the 1DO3 URL.
For example going to www.1do3.com/020801 will
take you direct to BBC News
2. Using the functions of 1DO3
1DO3 has a number
of simple functions that can further enhance your experience of 1DO3
and the Internet. The purpose of each and how to use them is
outlined below.
- Commenting on a website in
1DO3
At 1DO3 we want the people who actually use
our site to tell us exactly what they think about the sites they
visit. Was it any good? Did it perform as you expected from our
descriptions? Or was it no good at all for what you wanted to do?
Whatever you've got to say about a website, we want to
know.
Comments can be either public or private. This means
that you can decide whether you want the comment to be seen by all
the other users of 1DO3 or whether you just want it to be seen by
the 1DO3 team. To make a comment, click on the pinkle butterfly
next to each website that we list. Public comments do not appear
immediately so that we can check they have actually been submitted
by the person named as the author, and to ensure that the language
is not libellous, offensive or obscene. This process is normally
completed within 24 hours.
- Suggesting changes to 1DO3
One
of the most unique things about 1DO3 is that we want our users to
be able to suggest specific things that we should change about our
site. What websites we should have, what functions might be useful
and what things we should cover that perhaps don't appear yet. Put
simply, we want this to be the most useful website for each of the
people who use it, and we can't make that happen without knowing
what you want us to include. Suggesting changes to 1DO3 couldn't
be simpler, just follow the instructions below.
To suggest
something to us at 1DO3, simply click on "suggest changes". This
appears in the top right of all the pages in 1DO3 and on the
banner above all the websites. You will then be able to write your
suggestions into the box provided and send them to us. Each time
you send us a suggestion that we act upon, your name will be added
to the roll of honour as a contributor to our website.
- Sending a page of 1DO3 to a
friend
If you think that a page of 1DO3 would be
particularly useful or relevant to someone else, you can send them
it on the spot. Clicking on "Send this page", which appears on
each page of 1DO3 , will allow you to fill in a form with your
friends email address and add a personal comment that will be sent
along with whatever page you've decided upon.
- Making 1DO3 your home page
You
can make any page of 1DO3 into your homepage. Your homepage is the
first page that you see when you start your Internet browser
program. When you click on "make home page" you will see a message
asking you if you are sure that you want to make that particular
page of 1DO3 your homepage. If you say yes, then whatever page you
are on will be the first page that you see whenever you go using
the Internet.
If you decide subsequently that you want to
change your homepage to a different part of 1DO3, simply click on
"make home page" on the page that you would like as your new home
page.
If you decide that you do not want 1DO3 as your
homepage any more, follow the steps below to change it to
something else: If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer:
* Go to the page that you want to appear when you start
Internet Explorer. * On the Tools menu, click Internet
Explorer. * Click the General tab. * Under Home Page,
click Use Current. If you are using Netscape Navigator: *
Open the page that you want to use as your home page. * From
the Edit menu, choose Preferences then click the Navigator
category. * Click Use Current Page to select the current page
as your home page.

3.
Using your personal 1DO3 page
When you
become a member of 1DO3 you gain access to a personal page that has
a number of features designed to make 1DO3 even more useful. To
access your personal 1DO3 page you can click on the words 'Personal
1DO3' at the top of the screen or on the banner or click on your
name in the top right hand corner of the screen. The way in which
each of the features of your personal page operates is explained
below.
- Your Personal 1DO3
Selection
This area of the personal page is a place
where you can create a list of sites from any area of 1DO3 that
you use regularly or find particularly useful. Once a site is
added to your selection, it will be accessible via a single click.
Up to 20 sites can be added to your list.
To add a site to
your 1DO3 selection simply click on the yellow star that appears
next to each of the websites in 1DO3 and on the banner above each
site that you visit. To remove a site from your list, simply click
the word 'delete' that appears to the right of every item in your
list.
- Changing your preferences
As a
member of 1DO3, you have the option to change the way 1DO3 opens
and operates according to your personal preferences, simply click
on 'Change Preferences' on your personal 1DO3 page. In order to
make sure that it is only you who can make changes to your
preferences, you will need you username and password to access
this area.
The first of these preferences is to select the
page that 1DO3 will take you to when you first come to the site
(i.e. when you type in www.1DO3.com). You have the choice of
starting on your personal page, the 1DO3 front page or the last
page that you visited on your previous visit to the site. On this
page you also have the option to set 1DO3 as your homepage, click
here to find out more about this.
Second on the
preferences list is the option to have all external sites open in
a new window. By ticking the box, you will force every site that
you click on it 1DO3 to open in a new browser window. The
advantage of this option is that you can have more than one site
open at once and nip back and forth between them very quickly and
easily, particularly useful when trying to make price comparisons
between a number of online shops for example.
The third
preference is to remove yourself from the 1DO3 mailing list.
Although we do not give your email address to any third parties
and send no junk mail, you may still wish to take yourself off our
list. To do this, simply tick the box provided.
The fourth
option is to hide your email address from other users whenever you
make a comment on a website. This means that although your comment
is still visible, you will never have to worry about your email
address becoming public. However, you should note that we will
still contact you whenever you make a comment to establish that
the comment has been submitted by the person named as the author.
- Changing your personal
details
By clicking on 'Change Personal Details' on
your personal 1DO3 page, you will be able to make any changes to
the details that you provided us with when you signed up as a
member. To ensure your details are kept secure, we ask you to
provide your username and password every time you access this area
of the personal page. If you make any changes to your details,
please be sure to click the 'Amend' button at the end to ensure
that your changes are saved.
- Changing your password
Click on
'Change Password' to see the options available for changing your
password. There are several systems available that can help you to
retrieve your username, obtain a new password and change an
existing password. Simply follow the instructions provided to make
any changes. If you still have problems, please email membersupport@1DO3.com.
Of course, it goes without saying that you should keep your
username and password secret at all times.
