  Easy Map
A fantastic site for obtaining a map based on address information. Simply type in the details of the address and press go. The site will then generate a map pinpointing the exact location. This map can be emailed to someone or printed for reference. 
  
  Expedia Maps
A clear and useful interface together with an wide range of information and links make this part of Expedia easy and simple to use. Simply enter the name of a city or area anywhere in the world into the search engine wait for your map to appear. 
  
  Mapquest
Mapquest was one of the first sites to attempt to map the entire world. Enter virtually any location and this site will provide you with a map. They are not always suitable for navigation but can be scaled as close as street level and are a useful guide.  
  
  Multimap
This mapping website allows you to find a street map of anywhere in Britain based on postcode information. The maps can viewed at a number of different scales and travel directions are provided. This site also includes aerial photos and local information. 
  
  Streetmap
Simply enter a postcode or location and this no-frills site will quickly provide you with an accurate and clear street map of the local area. You can zoom in or out and move around the area with a click of the mouse on the screen. 
  
  Up my street
By simply entering your postcode, you will be given an up to date guide to some very detailed information about your local neighbourhood. Includes property prices, local services, local government, childcare, employment and much more besides. 
  
Find star charts
  AAVSO - Charts
This is a star chart site that is aimed at the more experienced stargazers. It is a comprehensive site with loads of interactive features and useful information and advice. 
  
  Sky and Telescope
A good starting point for amateur astronomy. Contains articles and notes about major events such as eclipses, meteor showers and conjunctions as well as how-to information and hints and tips for anyone just starting out. 
  
  Sky Maps
At this site you can freely download star charts and get hold of loads of other relevant documents and information. The charts are suitable for everyone, including newcomers and can be used as an introduction to the pastime. 
  
  Sky View Café
This is a website that lets you see loads of different astronomical information in both numerical and graphical form. There is also a 3-D orrery, displays of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, an astronomical event calendar, an ephemeris generator. 
  
Get a countryside map
  Ordnance Survey
The ordnance survey site allows you to obtain any of the maps that they produce, either on the phone or online. Many maps are also available to download for personal or business use and can be tailored to a very specific area. 
  
  Ramblers Association - Maps
This is another excellent and informative area of the Rambler's Association website. It contains loads of information about maps and where to buy them as well as explaining how to interpret and use them effectively. 
  
Get a rail map
  National Rail - Maps
Here you can find high quality and detailed maps that can be downloaded as PDF files. These show all aspects of the national rail network, making it easier to plan routes and see where you want to go. They can take a while to download but it’s worth it. 
  
  The Tube - Maps
Here you can find copies of the official Tube maps, including fare zone maps and travelcard zone maps. These can be downloaded for free in a variety of sizes. You can also find bus, river and tourist maps. 
  
Get a ski map
  Iglu - Media
This part of the excellent Iglu site contains maps, webcam images and 360 degree images of most of the major ski resorts. This is an excellent way to get an idea of a place before you visit. 
  
  Ski Info - Ski Maps
A site that contains ski maps for resorts in France, Norway, Italy, Switzerland and Sweden. You can also find lots of other information about the resorts including snow reports, a variety of useful facts and a link to the resorts website. 
  
Get geographical reference information
  DK Online - World Atlas
Strangely enough you can't directly access maps from this website. However, you can find links to up to date sources of online geographical information about most of the countries of the world. A very useful geographical resource. 
  
  The World Factbook
Use this site from the CIA to access a huge amount of information about the countries and regions of the world. You can download some very good reference maps of different regions, access economic, political and physical information about each country. 
  
Get historical maps
  History - Maps
This is one of the most comprehensive listings of historical maps on the web. They are organised into categories according to what area of the globe they cover, making it easier to find the maps you want. 
  
  Old Maps
This site provides access to a large database of historical maps. You can search for particular place names, addresses or co-ordinates and view the maps at different scales. A fascinating site. 
  
Get marine charts
  Chart Sales
This excellent site allows you to purchase the full range of British admiralty charts that cover all corners of the globe. All purchasable online at very reasonable prices. 
  
  Marine Planner
An excellent online marine planning tool. Features weather information and downloadable marine charts that cover the majority of the globe.

  British Libraries Online
This site offers a list of all the online public libraries in the UK with links to each of them. It also includes information about other libraries, OPACs and national libraries. An excellent research resource. 
  
  Newspaper Archives
This site provides links to hundreds of online newspaper archives all over the world. Although primarily focused on the US media, there is a page of worldwide archives, including several useful links to British sites. 
  
  The British Library
The website of the UK's national library. It allows you to search for a huge variety of information in over 10 million documents as well as offering a wide range of extremely useful services. Ignore the annoying pop up window, this is a great site. 
  
  The Internet Public Library
The Internet Public Library is an excellent resource. It is one of the first libraries for the internet community and is intended to discover the best ways for librarians to contribute to the web. There is a huge amount of information accessible here. 
  
  WWW Virtual Library
This is one of the first online libraries of the web. Each category is maintained by someone who has a level of expertise in that area and this has led to the content being fairly comprehensive and wide ranging. An excellent way to find relevant websites.

  Maps.com - Map Skills
This section of the Maps.com site covers most areas of basic map skills and will help you to become a more competent map user. It covers map projections, types of maps, locations and the coordinate system, map scales and time zones. 
  
  Navigation Skills
This useful little site contains a large amount of information to help with most aspects of basic navigation, both with and without a compass. It also has loads of tips for leaving the minimum impact on the environment when travelling in the countryside. 
  
  Ramblers Association - Navigation
This is an excellent and informative page produced by the Ramblers Association. It covers all aspects of map reading and is easy to follow and very comprehensive. 
  
Look at overhead photographs
  Earth from Space
This site lets you download a large number of good quality images of earth from space. They can be very large and take a while to download and the majority are of the United States. However, they're still fun to have. 
  
  FAS
The Federation of American Scientists site has a fascinating archive of overhead images that were taken for intelligence purposes during military action. From WWII to Afghanistan, this site provides some astounding military imagery. 
  
  Terraserver
The clarity and detail of the overhead shots is incredible - it's almost like having your own virtual spy satellite. It provides an ever increasing library of overhead photographs of astounding detail. Also has links to information about each area. 
  
Plan a route
  Michelin Travel
Michelins site allows route planning in Europe as well as the UK and has lots of options for the route you could take, the roads you could use and even the consumption for fuel along the way. It also takes departure time into account. 
  
  The AA - Route Planner
The AA route finder allows you to plan a road journey between any UK destinations via anywhere else. Routes can be chosen for caravan/trailer suitability. Maps are provided and you are told what to look for on road signs on the way as are service stops. 
  
  The RAC - Route Planner
The RAC route planning provides the option of fastest or shortest journey and has an option of long or short descriptions of the directions. It provides a map of the journey and detailed directions, and the route is reversible for the return journey. 
  
Use an atlas and get world maps
  Atlapedia
Here you can find political and physical maps of most of the countries in the world. You can also get key statistics about geography, climate, people, religion, language, history and economy for each country. The site is easy to use and fast to load. 
  
  Maps.com - Atlas
This site lets you view political and physical maps of all the continents and most of the countries of the world. You can download printable versions of the maps that you find and access lots of facts and figures about each country or region. 
  
  National Geographic - Maps
One of the most informative geographic sites available on the web. The site contains a brilliant 'map machine' section that lets you move around the globe selecting the map and scale that you want, or access news and maps about topical issues. 
  
  Texas University - Maps
This is a good place to find a number of different high quality maps. There is a useful section providing maps of topical regions such as Afghanistan as well as world maps and maps of the continents and regions of the world.
