This is a useful list of links to some of the best online dictionary sites. There is a description of each of the sites to help you pick the best one for your purposes. A very good resource. 
  
  Cambridge Dictionary
This is a quick and simple English language dictionary that finds simple definitions of words along with useful examples of possible uses to help you understand their meaning better. Straightforward and effective. 
  
  Dictionary.com
A good straightforward web based dictionary that allows you to find definitions and synonyms in a no nonsense way. However, there are a host of other features that can let you translate words, use different language dictionaries and get free software. 
  
  Langenburg Dictionary
A fantastic dictionary compilation site that allows you to get exact and approximate definitions from loads of different online dictionaries, get rhymes, make words for scrabble, get clichés, find quotations, decipher anagrams and find pig Latin. Phew! 
  
  One Look Dictionary
This dictionary site searches through a large number of online dictionaries to spell check words or find a range of definitions. It is easy to visit the various dictionaries that are searched and there are different language options available. 
  
  Plain Text Dictionary
This site begins with a long and jargon filled description of the way the dictionary is constructed, but don’t be put off. Simply click on a letter in the list below and you will see a long list of words starting with that letter along with a definition. 
  
  Thesaurus.com
This site is the online version of Roget's Thesaurus and it is the companion site of Dictionary.com. It shares the same simplicity of use and efficient functionality as well as a section to help you understand how to find synonyms using the thesaurus. 
  
Find anagrams
  Anagram Genius
This site takes names of yourself or friends and emails you with the best anagrams. You can change the emphasis of the anagram and choose to send it to a friend as well. All of this is free, making it good for a laugh if nothing else. 
  
  Anagrams.net
This site is a huge archive of funny and revealing anagrams arranged into loads of different categories. You'll be amazed at how eerily relevant some of the anagrams can be. 
  
  Wordsmith Anagrams
This is one of the most comprehensive anagram finding tools on the web. It will find pretty much every combination of the letters in the word or phrase that you put in. There is also the option to specify certain aspects of the anagrams that are found. 
  
Find quotations and links
  Bartleby - Quotations
This is the quotations page of the wonderful Bartleby site. It has links to a number of excellent sources of quotations and searching for a particular quote or person is easy. They also have a large archive of their 'quote of the day'. A great site. 
  
  Famous Quotations
Here you can find famous quotations by hundreds of different people. You can search by author, alphabetically, by category or by country or there are a number of other options. A good place to find quotes for all occasions. 
  
  Lexical Freenet
It's hard to find a way of describing this fascinating and unique site. The best way to look at it is as a 'toolbox' that lets you find a huge amount of related words, concepts, quotes and definitions of the words or names you put in. Truly ingenious. 
  
  Quotations Page
This is one of the internet's oldest quotations databases and it contains over 20,000 different quotes. There is a quote of the day, a set of motivational quotes and you can search for quotations by author. A good comprehensive site. 
  
  Quote Geek
This is one of the more fun quotation sites that lets you look for quotes from either personalities and literature, or television and film. There are loads to browse through and they can be used in all occasions or just to be a geek with your friends. 
  
  Quoteland
It's easy to find a huge number of different quotes here and searching for the perfect one is simple and quick. If you can't be bothered with that, you can always ask to be given a random selection of quotes from the archive. Another good quotes website. 
  
  Word Spy
A fun site that lets you keep track of the ways in which words are being used. It is chiefly concerned with newly coined words, existing words that have enjoyed a recent renaissance, and older words that are now being used in new ways. Very interesting. 
  
Find rhymes
  Cockney Rhyming Slang
This is a dictionary of cockney rhyming slang that lets you translate words or phrases from English into cockney or vice versa. There is also the 'Uncle Fred' feature that lets you translate whatever you want to say into a more cockney turn of phrase. 
  
  Rhymezone
A good site where you can find a wide variety of rhymes, synonyms, definitions and much much more. You can search for all sorts of variations on words and the results are comprehensive and quickly found. 
  
  Write Express - Rhyming Dictionary
This is a simple but effective rhyming dictionary. It lets you look for end rhymes, beginning rhymes, double rhymes and first or last syllable rhymes. 
  
Translate something online
  Babelfish
Possibly the coolest name for a translation page on the web. This Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy inspired translation tool lets you translate up to 150 words or entire web pages into a large number of different languages. 
  
  Language Identifier
This site can search and identify 47 languages to identify any text that you type. It is generally accurate with any of the languages that it knows. A useful and interesting service. 
  
  Lexicool
This is the most comprehensive directory of bilingual and multilingual dictionaries on the internet. The site has a fully searchable database, with hundreds of titles referenced. This is a truly brilliant language resource. 
  
  Travlang
This site can translate words and phrases between a huge number of combinations of 18 mainly European languages. A useful service particularly aimed at travellers. There is also a link to a number of other foreign language dictionaries online. 
  
Understand an acronym
  Acronym Finder
This is another simple site for translating any of the acronyms, abbreviations and 'initialisms' that you come across in everyday life. Results are very comprehensive, often giving several definitions to choose from. A good little site. 
  
  Stands 4
This is one of the best sources of information about abbreviations and acronyms. They are split into a number of categories, making it easier to find what you’re looking for. A fantastic resource. 
  
  VERA
This is the website of the Virtual Entity of Relevant Acronyms. It is a site on which you can find explanations for computer and IT based acronyms such as CPU or RGB. It's not a pretty site but can help explain strange technology jargon. 
  
  WWW Acronym Server
This site lets you look up the meaning of an acronym or enter a word and see what acronyms it appears in. The site isn't very pretty but works efficiently and provides fairly comprehensive results.
