Check availability
	Broadband Map A useful resource that can show you whether you are in a broadband enabled area of the country. There are maps showing broadband enabled exchanges, cable coverage and areas within range of enabled exchanges, but you should still check your postcode.
	BT Broadband Checker This is the BT online tool that lets you input your postcode and phone number to find out if you can receive ADSL wherever you are. All ADSL services in the UK are currently run through BT's exchanges so this is the definitive test to take.
Check your current connection speed
	McAfee - Internet Speedometer A simple but well presented and easy to use speedometer that tests your internet connection speed and presents the results in an easy to understand way. Simple but effective.
	Numion One of the most accurate internet connection speed testing sites. You can see how fast you are really able to browse along with statistical presentations of your results and previous tests. There's also a lot of stuff to read about internet speed.
	Test My Speed Loads of different speed tests are available here. Choose a good one by selecting a test from the UK listings and then sit back and be pleasantly surprised or wildly disappointed by your real speed at which you are browsing the net.
Compare broadband services
	ADSL Guide The ADSL Guide will help you through the troubles of finding a broadband service provider. The site features a comparison of all the major ISPs, as well as explanations of terms in plain English. One of the best broadband resources around.
	Broadband Help This is a guide to the important aspects of broadband access to the internet. It explains the options that you have in selecting a type of service and offers advice about where to buy. You can also read the rest of this large and informative site.
	BT Open Woe An unofficial BT openworld users forum that is a great source of information about BTs services and products. The discussion forums let you find real information from real customers and get much less biased information than you would through BT.
	Nthell World An unofficial site for users of NTL's services. It contains a wealth of useful information that you may not be able to get from NTL directly and has loads of excellent discussion forums. Frequently much more use than NTL's infamous customer services.
Get a broadband internet connection
	BT Openworld BT Openworld currently offer a number of dialup and ADSL internet access products. However, beware of their 'unmetered' access and 'anytime' products, as they are seriously restricted and do not currently represent good value compared to other ISPs.
	ISP Review ISP review has one of the largest listings of UK based ISPs on the web and the site contains reviews and information about each one. Of particular use are the user forums, which are some of the busiest and most informative forums on this subject in the UK
	NTL NTL offer a range of digital TV, broadband internet access, phone and ISP services. They are not available everywhere so the first thing to do is check your postcode to see what's available in your area. Their service is one of the cheapest and fastest.
	Telewest Telewest offer a range of digital TV, broadband internet and phone services through their cable network. They are only available in certain areas of the UK but it's easy to do a postcode check to see what they can offer you.
	UK ISP Directory This is a good directory site that can help you find metered or unmetered ISPs for home or business use all over the UK. The directory also covers broadband providers, domain name services and web hosting. A useful site.
Get anti virus software
	Comp Info - Anti Virus A good directory with lots of well organised links to anti-virus resources on the web. From here you can find out all about how viruses work and what the latest dangers are as well as accessing a range of useful websites concerning anti-virus efforts.
	Free Byte Anti-Virus Software Here you can find a huge range of free anti-virus software and other handy stuff like firewalls and virus removal tools. If you don't want to shell out to the likes of Symantec then this is a great place to find the cost free alternatives.
	McAfee Makers of some very good and widely used virus checking and firewall software. Their virus checks are used by the likes of Hotmail. You can subscribe to their services and they operate entirely online, meaning easy protection with no software to install.
	Symantec Manufacturers of the world famous Norton Anti-Virus products as a number of other excellent system tools. As well as purchasing any of the products in the range, you can get free updates for your anti-virus software and read about the latest viruses.
Visit broadband specific sites
	Adrenaline Vault This is a good place to go if you're looking for cheats, hints and downloads for a wide variety of games and games platforms. They also have lots of games news and reviews and information about hardware and software to improve your gaming experience.
	Broadband Content Britain is seriously behind in providing high quality broadband websites with streaming media and interactive games and features. In the mean time sites like this one are very useful for finding the best of what the rest of the world has to offer.
	Earthcam A huge directory of webcams from all sorts of odd locations around the world. See what's going on in Sydney's clubs as you eat your lunch or have a look at someones office. A fascinating way to look at the world form the comfort of your home. Excellent.
	My Movies Here you can find clips and trailers from the latest Hollywood releases. The best of these can be found in the broadband area where there's loads to see, including some exclusive behind the scenes features and news stories.
	Shockwave An accessible site that has tons to keep people of all ages amused. Lots and lots of games can be found here that range from variations on old arcade classics to some infuriating puzzle games. The atomfilms section is also excellent.
	Sputnik 7 An online magazine site aimed squarely at the youth market. It features music videos, film clips, some Japanese anime and lots of other similar content. There's always something on to listen to or watch and it's always worth a look.
	The Broadband Guide A guide to some of the best sites around with broadband specific content such as streaming music and films. It is a UK based site and many of the links reflect that, although there is a lot of good content from other parts of the world. Lots of variety.
