Check your level of protection
	Leak Test A very useful little utility from the same people who produced 'Shields Up'. If you download this tiny program and follow the instructions, you can find out whether your firewall is working properly and offering the control over programs that it should.
	Shields Up This is the best place to come to test the effectiveness of your firewall. Follow the processes described and you will be shown how vulnerable your PC is to attack and given advice about what to do. A simple but very useful website.
Get a firewall
	BlackICE PC Protection This is a popular piece of firewall software and here you can download the free evaluation version that lets you try it out before deciding to buy. The price of the retail version is quite reasonable but some have said it is not as secure as Zone Alarm.
	Zone Alarm These days, everyone should have a firewall on their computer and Zone Alarm is the one to choose. It is free to download and simple to install, with a paid for 'pro' version available with even more security feautures. A brilliant piece of software.
Get an online virus scan
	Housecall Virus Scan A simple and effective online virus scan that you can use whenever you want, and all for free. This service protects you against the very latest viruses and is a very good way to make sure that your PC is not infected without purchasing any software.
	McAfee Virus Scan Online This is a very simple way to regularly scan your PC for the latest viruses, as often as you wish, without having to install large amounts of software and for a very reasonable price. All the checking is done online and thus you never have to get updates.
Get anti virus software
	Comp Info - Anti Virus A good directory with lots of well organised links to anti-virus resources on the web. From here you can find out all about how viruses work and what the latest dangers are as well as accessing a range of useful websites concerning anti-virus efforts.

	Ad Subtract This is a commonly used and well established piece of software that allows you to control how much advertising pops up on your screen. By removing much of the advertising content from the web, you are likely to speed up your browsing considerably.
	Cnet - Browsing Companions Here you can download a number of small pieces of software that will stop pop-up adverts and make internet browsing a more pleasant experience. There are lots to choose from so read the reviews of each to select the best one for you.
	Web Washer A popular and effective way to remove adverts from web page when browsing. You can download a trial version here that you can use for a month before you have to pay. Probably worth the money if you're annoyed by constant adverts cluttering up the web.
