At the BBC chat site you can talk to the stars and guests from many popular shows in pre-arranged chat sessions. You can find out about upcoming events and read or post messages on the message boards. A good chance to speak to someone famous.

One of the most popular places to chat online in the UK and the USA. You will need to download AOL messenger in order to take advantage of the chat facilities but this is easily done and doesn't take long to set up. It also a pretty safe place for kids. 
  
  ICQ
ICQ is one of the most widely used instant message programs out there. It has a massive number of functions that allow you to communicate in different ways and transfer files to other people. A very useful tool but it can be a little complex for some. 
  
  MSN Messenger
Another one of the most commonly used messaging programs comes from Microsoft. It is now included in Windows XP, which means that an increasing number of people will have it in the future. Its very simple and easy to use and great for chatting to friends.

A good site aimed at highlighting the potential dangers of chatting online. There's lots of good advice to make sure you stay safe as well as some stories from families who have had some very unpleasant experiences. Well worth reading before you chat. 
  
  Wise Up to the Net
Here you can download the booklet produced by the Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet, set up in 2001 to investigate the dangers posed to children by online paedophiles. It contains lost of advice for parents to help their children stay safe.
