	BBC Chat At the BBC chat site you can talk to the stars and guests from many popular shows in pre-arranged chat sessions. You can find out about upcoming events and read or post messages on the message boards. A good chance to speak to someone famous.
	MSN Chat Loads of different online chat rooms are available here, covering lots of different age groups and subjects. You can create your own chat rooms, find any friends that might be online and create a list of your favourite rooms. Also has safety advice.
	Yahoo Chat Loads of different chat rooms covering a massive amount of different subjects. There's something here for everyone and you can always create your own room if you can’t find what you want.

	AOL Chat One of the most popular places to chat online in the UK and the USA. You will need to download AOL messenger in order to take advantage of the chat facilities but this is easily done and doesn't take long to set up. It also a pretty safe place for kids.
	ICQ ICQ is one of the most widely used instant message programs out there. It has a massive number of functions that allow you to communicate in different ways and transfer files to other people. A very useful tool but it can be a little complex for some.
	MSN Messenger Another one of the most commonly used messaging programs comes from Microsoft. It is now included in Windows XP, which means that an increasing number of people will have it in the future. Its very simple and easy to use and great for chatting to friends.

Join an online discussion group
	Google Groups From this part of Google you can access the full range of Usenet discussion groups. Read comments and post messages on any topic you wish to discuss. The full 20 year archive is available here with over 700 million messages! Something for everyone.
	Yahoo Groups Join online groups dedicated to specific subjects. You can post messages, swap files and send newsletters and emails. If there's no group for what you want to discuss, you can even start your own. A very wide range of subjects to choose from.

	BBC Webwise This is a good place to come if you are an internet novice and need good advice and information about different apsects of using the web. This site can help you undertsand the way the internet works and allow you to have more fun when you're online.
	Chat Danger A good site aimed at highlighting the potential dangers of chatting online. There's lots of good advice to make sure you stay safe as well as some stories from families who have had some very unpleasant experiences. Well worth reading before you chat.
	Wise Up to the Net Here you can download the booklet produced by the Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet, set up in 2001 to investigate the dangers posed to children by online paedophiles. It contains lost of advice for parents to help their children stay safe.
