  BUBL - Dictionary Links
This is a useful list of links to some of the best online dictionary sites. There is a description of each of the sites to help you pick the best one for your purposes. A very good resource. 
  
  Cambridge Dictionary
This is a quick and simple English language dictionary that finds simple definitions of words along with useful examples of possible uses to help you understand their meaning better. Straightforward and effective. 
  
  Dictionary.com
A good straightforward web based dictionary that allows you to find definitions and synonyms in a no nonsense way. However, there are a host of other features that can let you translate words, use different language dictionaries and get free software. 
  
  Langenburg Dictionary
A fantastic dictionary compilation site that allows you to get exact and approximate definitions from loads of different online dictionaries, get rhymes, make words for scrabble, get clichés, find quotations, decipher anagrams and find pig Latin. Phew! 
  
  One Look Dictionary
This dictionary site searches through a large number of online dictionaries to spell check words or find a range of definitions. It is easy to visit the various dictionaries that are searched and there are different language options available. 
  
Find an encyclopaedia online
  Bartleby
A fantastic site that makes it easy to find classic works of literature to read online or download for free. This is exactly the kind of thing that the internet can be most useful for and Bartleby have done a great job in creating this website. 
  
  Encarta
Encarta is Microsoft's well known reference source. This British version is a well thought out and very useful source of a massive range of information and much better for UK users than the main American site. Full of good stuff for all sorts of people. 
  
  Encyclopedia Britannica
This is the official site of the world renowned Encyclopedia Britannica. You can access a massive amount of information here on pretty much any subject, and the site also includes a good online dictionary and thesaurus. 
  
  Encyclopedia Directory
The lovely people at Durham University Library have put together this listing of encyclopedia websites on the web. There are absolutely loads of them here and particularly useful is the section dealing with specific subjects. 
  
  Free Internet Encyclopedia
This is an encyclopaedia composed of information available on the Internet. There are two sections, one which gives less detailed information than the other comprehensive section, which can be useful if you don’t want to get bogged down in information. 
  
Get help with homework online
  A-Levels
Links to online resources for the majority of A-Level courses. The site is easy to use and there are descriptions of each link to help you find relevant information as quickly as possible. Not as comprehensive as some but still well worth checking out. 
  
  Educate
A resource aimed mainly at the parents and teachers of primary school children, although the web search section goes up to GCSE. There are separate sections of the site for parents, teachers and learning resources and the content is usually very good. 
  
  Education Guardian - Directories
This is a really good page that gives details of the best places to find educational resources on the web. There are so many educational sites out there that this site can help you to save loads of time and effort when trying to root out information. 
  
  How Stuff Works
Loads of information about how all sorts of different things work. It can be a little slow to load and there aren't as many pictures as you might hope. However, the site can be very informative and covers a good range of topics. 
  
  How Things Work
This site is written by physics professor in the USA and consequently, the questions he answers can be very simple or hugely in depth. However, much of the sites content is fascinating and can be browsed through randomly or in categories. 
  
  National Grid for Learning
This is a government sponsored site that provides a network of selected links to web sites that offer high quality content and information. It does provide links to some excellent sites but there may not be quite as many as you would think. 
  
  School Zone
Access to over 40,000 free educational resources, all of which have been reviewed by teachers. There is loads to find here but the site is generally easy enough to use and can be very useful for most subjects. 
  
  Teacher Net - Teaching and Learning
A gateway to some of the very best teaching resources available on the web. There are hundreds of lesson plans available as well as links to organisations such as museums and libraries to enable you to the best use of local facilities. An excellent site. 
  
  Topmarks
A comprehensive site for students in the UK, covering a very wide range of subjects. Simply select a subject and age range and any extra keywords and this site will provide you with a variety of relevant online resources.

  British Libraries Online
This site offers a list of all the online public libraries in the UK with links to each of them. It also includes information about other libraries, OPACs and national libraries. An excellent research resource. 
  
  The British Library
The website of the UK's national library. It allows you to search for a huge variety of information in over 10 million documents as well as offering a wide range of extremely useful services. Ignore the annoying pop up window, this is a great site. 
  
  The Internet Public Library
The Internet Public Library is an excellent resource. It is one of the first libraries for the internet community and is intended to discover the best ways for librarians to contribute to the web. There is a huge amount of information accessible here. 
  
  UK Higher Education Libraries
This site contains links to all of the university and research libraries in the UK, listed alphabetically. Most of these have searchable catalogues and will be extremely helpful in finding the source you need. 
  
  WWW Virtual Library
This is one of the first online libraries of the web. Each category is maintained by someone who has a level of expertise in that area and this has led to the content being fairly comprehensive and wide ranging. An excellent way to find relevant websites. 
  
Purchase books and study guides
  123 Pricecheck
This site offers a free service to allow you to compare the prices of books, DVDs, Videos and music, including the postage charge. A hugely useful way of finding out if you are getting the best deal. 
  
  ABE Books
This highly recommended site is a fantastic place to find second hand, rare and out of print books from thousands of dealers all over the world. An excellent place to buy books. 
  
  Amazon
Amazon has now become more than just a cheap online book dealer, it now sells a huge range pf products and is generally reliable and quick to deliver. One of the best shops for sheer choice but not always the best for price. Always worth a look. 
  
  Book Brain
This site provides a comparison of prices of books from a wide range of online bookshops, so you are likely to get a bargain every time you buy. If you visit any of these dealers through one of the links provided, a percentage of sales goes to charity. 
  
  CGP Books
CGP produce an extensive range of good quality revision texts for all Key Stages + GCSE and A Levels. You can order online. 
  
  Oxford University Press – Education
This site takes you straight to good quality educational books under the headings of different age groups and key stages, as far as further education. There is also a section for international education. 
  
Read a newspaper
  British Media Online
From this site you can access most of the major newspapers published in the UK as well as a range of popular magazines, news websites and portals and some good current affairs sites. Although it looks a bit cluttered, this is an easy to use resource. 
  
  News Directory
The News Directory is a comprehensive listing of the world's press websites. This part of the site contains links to the websites of Britain's major nationwide newspapers. From here you can also access the regional section of the News Directory. 
  
  NISS - Online News Sources
This is a good resource that lists some of the best places to find news from all over the world and gain access to hundreds of different newspapers. There is a description of each site to help you find the right information and the list is well organised. 
  
  Paperboy
This is a colourful and easy to use site that has a vast amount of links to papers from all over the world. There are obvious links straight to the best of the UK press but you can also search for papers by name or region and get to news sites and radio. 
  
  The Internet Public Library - Newspapers
This part of the internet public library gives you access to newspapers online from virtually every country in the world. The links are organized by continent/country or in a title index. 
  
Use a search engine
  Ask Jeeves
A popular search engine that claims to be different because you can phrase your searches as questions. In reality, it works in much the same way as most search engines and can actually be slower than many of its rivals. Again, it can't touch Google. 
  
  Copernic
Copernic 2001 is one of the most useful tools for searching the net. It simultaneously uses all of the best search engines on the internet to provide results that are more likely to match your query. This site allows you to download copernic for free. 
  
  Google
The best search engine on the Internet bar none. Google is fast, effective and brilliantly simple. This is the UK version that allows you to search only British sites if you want. Quite simply the best there is. 
  
  Lycos
This is one of the most famous British search engines and may be worth a try if you want good British searches. However, it's still not a patch on Google. 
  
  Netscape
Another famous portal that is maintained by the same people behind the increasingly marginalised Netscape Navigator internet browser. Still worth a look though. 
  
  Yahoo
Yahoo is one of the most famous search engines and portals in existence. Its search is powered by Google and this guarantees better than average results. 
  
Use an atlas and get world maps
  Atlapedia
Here you can find political and physical maps of most of the countries in the world. You can also get key statistics about geography, climate, people, religion, language, history and economy for each country. The site is easy to use and fast to load. 
  
  BUBL - Map Collections
BUBL provides this useful list of links to some excellent web based map collections from all over the world covering a wide range of different continents, countries or regions. A very useful resource. 
  
  Maps.com - Atlas
This site lets you view political and physical maps of all the continents and most of the countries of the world. You can download printable versions of the maps that you find and access lots of facts and figures about each country or region. 
  
  National Geographic - Maps
One of the most informative geographic sites available on the web. The site contains a brilliant 'map machine' section that lets you move around the globe selecting the map and scale that you want, or access news and maps about topical issues. 
  
  Texas University - Maps
This is a good place to find a number of different high quality maps. There is a useful section providing maps of topical regions such as Afghanistan as well as world maps and maps of the continents and regions of the world.
