Click on the File Menu, or press ALT-F to access
these options. While the menu is open, click one
of the choices, or press the underlined letter
key to use that function.
Use the key or key-combination in parenthesis to
more quickly access the function without opening
the menu.
Open (O)
Click on the File menu, select Open (or use the Open
tool on the toolbar.) A dialog appears to allow you
to open a file for use in IrfanView. For an image of
the dialog, and complete descriptions of the options,
go here.
Reopen (Shift + R)
Click on the File menu, select Reopen.
Brings the file in again. Useful if you've made some
changes, but haven't saved them yet, and decide you
want to restore the original.
If more than one image is involved, re-open will let
you select from them again.
Open with external viewer
Click on the File menu, select Open with external viewer.
The image currently open in the viewer will be sent to
another program, such as another image editor. The program
will start, with the image loaded. This is very useful for
additional editing of images. For example, an icon image
open in IrfanView can be sent to an icon editing program
where changes can be made that can't (sorry!) be made in
IrfanView.
To use this option, you need to set up a viewer or
editor in which to open the images. This is done on
the Others 2 tab of the Properties menu.
Thumbnails (T)
Click on the File menu, select Thumbnails. A dialog
opens. For an image of the dialog, and complete
descriptions of the options, go here.
Slideshow (W)
Click on the File menu, select Slideshow. A dialog
opens. For an image of the dialog, and complete
descriptions of the options, go here.
Batch Conversion (B)
Click on the File menu, select Batch Conversion.
A dialog opens. For an image of the dialog, and
complete descriptions of the options, go here.
Rename File (F6)
Click on the File menu, select Rename File. A dialog
opens; type in a new name for the file and click OK.
The filename will be changed, both in the viewer and
on the hard drive (or other source.) To exit without
making a change, click the Cancel button.
While renaming the file, you may also choose to move
it to a new location: type in the full path name of
the new directory, followed by the name of the image.
The name will be changed, and the image will be placed
into the new directory. (This action may also be taken
without changing the name; just type in the path with
the old name.)
Move File (F7)
Click on the File menu, select Move File. The file
currently in the viewer will be moved to another
directory on your hard drive (or other media.) In
order for this function to work properly, you must
first set up a default directory for Move.
Go here for complete instructions on setting up
the default directory.
Copy File (F8)
Click on the File menu, select Copy File. The file
currently in the viewer will be copied to another
directory on your hard drive (or other media.) In
order for this function to work properly, you must
first set up a default directory for Copy.
Go here for complete instructions on setting up
the default directory.
Delete File (Del)
Click on the File menu, select Delete File. The file
currently in the viewer will be removed from your
hard drive (or other source.) Be sure you want this,
as the file is immediately removed. It remains in
the viewer, though; if you deleted by accident,
just resave the image.
There is also a delete option on the Edit menu: this
only removes the file from the viewer, it doesn't
affect the file on your hard drive.
Save (Ctrl + S)
Click on the File menu, select Save.
Save As... (S)
Click on the File menu, select Save As (or
use the Save As tool on the toolbar.)
A dialog appears to allow you to save your file
to disk. For an image of the Save As dialog, and
complete descriptions of the options, go here.
Print
Click on the File menu, click Print. A dialog appears
with options for printing an image. For an image of
the dialog, and complete descriptions of the options,
go here.
Select TWAIN Source
Click on the File menu, click Select TWAIN Source.
A dialog appears, allowing you to choose from the
scanners installed on your computer (if more than
one is present.) Click on the name of the scanner
you want to use, then click the Select button. To
exit without making a selection, click the Cancel
button.
Acquire (Ctrl + A)
Click on the File menu, click Acquire. The program
that runs your scanner will appear. Follow the
steps given in your scanner's manual for scanning
an image. When finished, the image will be placed
into IrfanView.
Exit (Esc)
Click on the File menu, select Exit. IrfanView will
close immediately. Be sure you've saved any images
or other files, as you aren't asked to confirm the
choice again.
MRUDs
Click on the File menu and point the mouse at MRUDs.
A sub-menu appears showing the most recently used
directories - those from which files have been opened.
The list shows up to six MRUDs. Click on one of them
and the Open dialog appears, already in the chosen
directory. From here you can open any file in that
directory.
The MRUDs list can be erased using the button on the
Others 1 tab, located in the Properties box, on the
Options menu.
