Click on the Options Menu, or press ALT-O to access
these options. While the menu is open, click one
of the choices, or press the underlined letter
key to use that function.

Use the key or key-combination in parenthesis to
more quickly access the function without opening
the menu.

Properties (P) Click on the Options Menu, then click Properties to access these options (or use the Properties tool on the toolbar.. A dialog box opens from which you can change many of the basic functions of IrfanView. For a complete list, go here.
Stop Animation (G) Click on the Options Menu, then click Stop Animation to perform this action. This is used to "freeze" animated gifs. The motion stops, and the gif is reduced to a single image. It can now be saved as a non-animated image. If you want to save all the frames, use the next option. Extract All Frames Click on the Options Menu, then click Extract All Frames to perform this action. A dialog box opens, allowing you to select the directory in which the frames will be stored on your computer. Find the directory you want, then click on Use Dir to have the images stored there. Click Cancel to abort the change. This option is available for animated gifs, mpg, and mov images. The frames from the image are placed into the directory with names something like this: imagename_irfanview_extract_000.bmp where imagename is, of course, the name of the original image, and 000 is the number of the frame. Note that the frames are stored as bmp files. For mov and mpg images, you are given a chance to change your mind before saving the frames to disk. These files can be quite large when extracted. A small mpg I tried played for only four seconds. The compressed movie file was only 150kb. When I extracted the frames, there were 69 images; a total of 11.8MB! When you have selected the output directory and clicked the OK button, another dialog appears: Movie Information. This lists the Width and Height for each frame, as well as the Bits Per Pixel, total number of Frames, the Extract directory (the one you just chose,) and the total Space Required. If you want to continue, click the OK button. To exit without extracting the frames, click Cancel. After you click OK, you'll see the image move through each frame as it is extracted. The 69 frame image took about twenty seconds to process, and left over eleven megabytes of images on my hard drive.
Capture (C) Click on the Options Menu, then click Capture. A dialog opens to allow you to capture portions of your screen. For an image of the dialog, and complete descriptions of the options, go here.
Video Size Click on the Options Menu and point at Video Size. A sub-menu appears with the choices Half size, Normal size, and Double size. Click one of them to set video playback at that size. This is helpful for making a small video larger, but also, some large videos don't play clearly and may look better at a smaller size. Loop Video/Music Click on the Options Menu, then click Loop Video/Music. This causes video and audio to repeat automatically each time the end is reached. A check mark next to the option (on the menu) shows that it is on. Click it again to turn it off. Play Audio CD Click on the Options Menu, then click Play Audio CD. If there is an audio CD in the CD drive, it will begin to play. Use the next option to stop it. Stop Audio CD Click on the Options Menu, then click Stop Audio CD. An audio CD that is playing will stop.
Sort Directory Files Click on the Options Menu and point at Sort Directory Files. A sub-menu appears with the choices by Name, by Date, by Size, and by Extension. These are available in both ascending and descending order. The final choice is No sort. Click your choice to set that sort option. This does not show when you open or save a file. However, when you activate any of the options that use the space bar to move forward and backspace to move backward through the files, they will be presented in the order set by your sort option. An example of this is using the full-screen mode to view the images. As you move forward or backward through them, they will appear in whatever sort order you have set. When you are finished, you can leave the sort order in place, or remove it by clicking No sort. It will stay in effect until you remove it. Set as Wallpaper Centered (Ctrl+Shift+C) Tiled (Ctrl+Shift+T) Previous Wallpaper (Ctrl+Shift+P) Click on the Options Menu and point at Set as Wallpaper. A sub-menu appears with the choices Centered, Tiled, Previous wallpaper. Choose one to have the current image made into a background for your Windows desktop. Centered will appear as just one image on the center of the screen. Tiled appears as multiple images, taking up all of the screen. (The icons on the desktop appear on top of the wallpaper.) Previous wallpaper restores the image that was replaced by this operation.
Minimize (M) Click on the Options Menu, then click Minimize to minimize the viewer to the Windows task bar. Click the IrfanView button on the task bar to restore the viewer to use. Always on Top Click on the Options Menu, then click Always on Top to cause IrfanView to always be visible on your screen, even when you open other programs. This can be removed at any time by clicking Always on Top again.
