Find an encyclopaedia online
  Bartleby
A fantastic site that makes it easy to find classic works of literature to read online or download for free. This is exactly the kind of thing that the internet can be most useful for and Bartleby have done a great job in creating this website. 
  
  Encarta
Encarta is Microsoft's well known reference source. This British version is a well thought out and very useful source of a massive range of information and much better for UK users than the main American site. Full of good stuff for all sorts of people. 
  
  Encyclopedia Britannica
This is the official site of the world renowned Encyclopedia Britannica. You can access a massive amount of information here on pretty much any subject, and the site also includes a good online dictionary and thesaurus. 
  
  Encyclopedia Directory
The lovely people at Durham University Library have put together this listing of encyclopedia websites on the web. There are absolutely loads of them here and particularly useful is the section dealing with specific subjects. 
  
  Free Internet Encyclopedia
This is an encyclopaedia composed of information available on the Internet. There are two sections, one which gives less detailed information than the other comprehensive section, which can be useful if you don’t want to get bogged down in information. 
  
Look up scientific reference information
  Biology
Although this site mainly consists of text and can look pretty uninspiring, it is a very good source of information and useful links. There are tutorials and a biology dictionary, and everything is well categorised. 
  
  BUBL
BUBL is an amazing and little known resource. It contains selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas. There is a truly massive amount of brilliant information that can be found here and you can either search categories or journals. 
  
  Chemsoc
This is the website of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is a fantastic place to find information, whether you're an expert or complete novice. There are lots of sections and loads of useful links, all within a well designed and easy to use framework. 
  
  Periodic Table
A good interactive version of the periodic table that allows you to view different properties of each element as you roll your mouse pointer over each one. You can select which properties are displayed and find a specific element by its name. 
  
  Phys Link - Reference
This is the reference section of the PhysLink science website. It contains a wealth of common scientific information such as an interactive periodic table, constants, coeffecients, a glossary and even the exact time via an atomic clock. 
  
  Physics.org
This site is run by the Institute of Physics as a place to find answers to any questions you may have about physics. You can ask a question directly from the front page and tailor the results to your level of understanding. An excellent physics resource. 
  
  Sci Links
A very good searchable directory of internet science resources. You can search by category or by keywords and all the resources are listed along with details of which key stages of the national curriculum they cover, making it very good for homework. 
  
  Unit Conversion
This site allows you to convert any amount of one unit into any amount of another. There is a huge list of different types of unit to choose from, including weights, measures, time and loads of scientific units.
