Find out how things work
  CCS - How Things Work
A simple page that provides explanations of the way a number of different things work. There is quite a list of things to choose from and the explanations are generally detailed and informative. Unfortunately you can't get answers to specific questions.

  How Stuff Works
Loads of information about how all sorts of different things work. It can be a little slow to load and there aren't as many pictures as you might hope. However, the site can be very informative and covers a good range of topics.

  How Things Work
This site is written by physics professor in the USA and consequently, the questions he answers can be very simple or hugely in depth. However, much of the sites content is fascinating and can be browsed through randomly or in categories.

  MadSci Network
The lab that never sleeps. MadSci is a science site that combines science with fun. You can ask questions that will be answered by one of a team of scientists, use the random knowledge generator, browse the archives and generally find out loads of stuff.

  Rudiments of Wisdom
A fantastic site by the brilliant Tim Hunkin, containing thousands of cartoons explaining almost everything there is to know. You could flick through this site for hours and not get bored. A genuinely excellent and very informative site. We love it.

Scientific American - Ask The Experts
A good archive of answers to hundreds of scientific questions in a 9 different categories. Includes information about biology, medicine, astronomy, chemistry, computers, geology, environment, maths and physics. An informative and detailed site.

Use a search engine
  All the Web
A good but less well known search engine that now rivals the size of Google in terms of web pages indexed. It is one of the very best for finding sounds, music and video on the net and can be clever at understanding what it is you are looking for.

  Ask Jeeves
A popular search engine that claims to be different because you can phrase your searches as questions. In reality, it works in much the same way as most search engines and can actually be slower than many of its rivals. Again, it can't touch Google.

  Google
The best search engine on the Internet bar none. Google is fast, effective and brilliantly simple. This is the UK version that allows you to search only British sites if you want. Quite simply the best there is.

  Lycos
This is one of the most famous British search engines and may be worth a try if you want good British searches. However, it's still not a patch on Google.

  Yahoo
Yahoo is one of the most famous search engines and portals in existence. Its search is powered by Google and this guarantees better than average results.
