Protecting Disks
The Protection tool is a replacement for the
conventional write-protect tab on floppy disks, this
tool provides a wide variety of protection options for
Iomega drive users.
Use the protection tool to:
- Write protect a disk through software, instead of
with a mechanical write protect switch.
- Write protect a disk and assign a password so that
no one can add, edit, or delete files without first
entering the password.
- Read/Write protect a disk so that it cannot be read
from, or written to , unless the user enters the password
you assign.
To Access the Protect or Unprotect Function:
- Insert the disk you want to protect or unprotect.
- Right click on the appropriate drive icon in My
Computer or Windows Explorer.
- Select Protect or Unprotect from
the drive shortcut menu.
- Choose the protection option you want to use. The
following list defines the protection options available:
- Write Protection prevents
anyone from accidentally overwriting critical
data. You can use a password when you write protect
your disk. If you forget the password, you can
recover your data by copying it to another disk
and formatting the original disk for reuse.
- Read/Write Protection prevents
anyone from reading from or writing to your disk.
This feature requires that you assign a password
to the disk.
CAUTION!
If you forget your password, your data cannot
be recovered. You must select the "I Forgot"
option from the Unprotect screen and long format
the disk before you can use it again.
- Use Password enables you
to protect your disk with a password. Use Password
is required if you select Read/Write Protection
and optional if you select Write Protection. You
must know the old password in order to change
passwords. Passwords are case sensitive. Remember
the case you use when you assign a password to
a disk.
NOTE: Although
Iomega disk protection options are set using
the Protect tool, the actual protection mechanism
is secured in the drive hardware. Because Iomega
disk protection is not software-based, it cannot
be bypassed using other software programs.
- Unprotect eliminates all
protection coding on the disk. You can remove
protection temporarily or permanently To remove
the protection permanently, uncheck the box entitled
"Remove protection only temporarily". If
this box remains checked, you have only temporary
access to the disk and the protection restores
automatically when you eject the disk.
- Click OK.
