Read/Write modes
You can choose between three different read/write modes when working with the
DiskExplorer.
Set the mode by clicking Tools->Options in the Main Menu.
- The default mode is the Read only mode, which only allows read
access to the drive. No data will be modified. Features like Edit current
sector, Write changes, Paste and Fill are disabled.
It is strongly recommended that you leave the read only
mode as the standard mode, because every write attempt to the drive can cause severe
data damage.
- In the Virtual write mode modifications are allowed, but will be
stored in memory.
Features like Edit current sector, Write changes, Paste
and Fill are enabled.
The modifications are not written to the drive until you click Tools->Options
and click the Write
button or exit the program and answer "Yes" in the warning
window.
If you want to discard the changes you made while in virtual write mode,
choose Tools->Options and click Clear or exit the program and answer "No"
in the warning window.
- The Direct read/ write mode allows full write access to the drive.
Modifications will be written directly to the drive.
Features like Edit current sector, Write changes, Paste
and Fill are enabled.
Please be aware that there is no undo of
modifications of the data on the drive when in direct read/ write mode, every
write access to the drive may result in irretrievable data loss.
You can see which mode is set on the status bar on the bottom. R/O means read
only, V/M means virtual write and R/W means direct read/write.
