Because of the importance of the embedded data within images, it is critical to retain the data even during image manipulation operations. In addition, image detail can be lost if multiple JPEG decoding/encoding operations are performed. The current modifications that FotoAlbum provides (rotation, flipping, updating EXIF) are all 100% lossless. Not only do they retain all EXIF data, but they also perform the operations without the traditional decoding/encoding process.
