Una mancha negra que se extiende detrás del ojo y las blancas primarias (las plumas más largas del ala) ayudan a distinguir a esta especie en el invierno del más abundante Charrán Rosado. Tamaño: 33-36 cm.; peso: 130-190 g. Audio 2 (M. Oberle). Anida en el centro-norte de América del Norte, típicamente invernando en las costas de México y el sur de Estados Unidos. Rara en las bahías de Puerto Rico (por ejemplo, el 26 de enero de 1969, el 7 y 27 de enero de 2001, el 23 de marzo de 2001, y el 2 y 19 de enero de 2002 en la bahía de Mayagüez; del 21 al 28 de enero de 1969 en la bahía de San Juan; el 6 de marzo de 1971 en Palo Seco; y el primero de abril de 1979 en el puente de la Constitución).
