  8. The Computer Emergency Response Team/Coordination Center (CERT/CC)  
  9. has received information concerning a vulnerability in release 2 of
  10. NeXTstep's NetInfo default configuration.  This vulnerability will
  11. be corrected in future versions of NeXTstep.

  15. I.   Description
  16.  
  17.      By default, a NetInfo server process will provide information to
  18.      any machine that requests it.
  19.  
  20.  
  21. II.  Impact
  22.  
  23.      Remote users can gain unauthorized access to the network's
  24.      administrative information such as the passwd file.
  25.  
  26.  
  27. III. Solution
  28.  
  29.      Ensure that the trusted_networks property of each NetInfo domain's
  30.      root NetInfo directory is set correctly, so that only those systems
  31.      which should be obtaining information from NetInfo are granted
  32.      access. The value for the trusted_networks property should be the
  33.      network numbers of the networks the server should trust.
  34.  
  35.      Note that improperly setting trusted_networks can render your
  36.      network unusable.

  38.      Consult Chapter 16, "Security", of the "NeXT Network and System
  39.      Administration" manual for release 2 for details on setting the
  40.      trusted_networks property of the root NetInfo directory.
