Christine Monod is a Canadian visual artist born in Kelowna, British Columbia, in 1962. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria.
Scope and content
The sculpture, by Monod 1997, consists of a jewel case [CD case] measuring 14 cm x 12.5 cm with a clear plastic cover, enclosing nine multicoloured clay disks measuring approximately. 2.5 cm in diameter, intended to represent the elements, with a schematic drawing of objects in pen on tracing paper mounted in back of the CD case which is tied closed with raffia.

The artist noted: "'Elements' is the title of this collection of clay circles. I began making these for a project whereby the clay disks would be inlaid into the lids of wooden boxes. My idea originally comes from the cedar boxes which were beautifully carved by the Coast Salish people. The decision to create boxes for holding memories is new to me. These are the original clay discs which shifted my creativity towards working with form and sculpture. Putting away the paint brushes in order to learn clay and glasswork has been a new process for me. This began when I decided to attend the first 'Artropolis' meeting and 'give the box a chance.' I considered this submission a collection of navigational magnets, which connect me to the past and memory."
