- Dear Nelson,
-
- Wish I had time for a longer letter! Enjoyed reading your GUIDE1.
-
- Quicksoft is doing very well with PC-Write. We have 4 1/2 people now; I
- do programming (weekends only!) and marketing, and some phone support. Megan
- handles orders, pays bills, reads the mail. Sharon answers the phone and does
- other order processing - stuffing envelopes, etc. Betty is working on a new
- manual (on our new LaserJet), and doing the rest of the phone support. Very
- soon Deb will start half time, doing more phone support, answering letters,
- and testing.
-
- We did about $260,000 in sales in 1984. Have about 2600 registered users,
- plus sold 9500 diskettes (at $10) and 3000 bulk orders. Foreign and private
- label versions are comming.
-
- Shareware works for us. People seem to like PC-Write; nobody sends in
- money for something they don't like! Also, people get very involved with their
- word processor, and really want us to stay around to update it. Of course,
- word processing on the IBM PC is the biggest single software package market
- (except for Commodore and Atari games.)
-
- I don't think shareware will work well for games and small utilities.
- People just aren't as dependent on them; they don't require extra support or
- updates.
-
- We will start making the on-disk manual more introductory and smaller than
- our printed manual. Partially this encourages people to register, but the main
- reason is our manual is getting very big (I think it's important to stay on
- one diskette.) Betty should have some on-disk tutorials ready later.
-
- Our commission arrangement ($25 of our $75 goes back to the registered
- user who gave a copy to the person who registers) works especially for a few
- special cases: people distributing our disk in a package of "blank" diskettes,
- people who give it away with hardware or whatever, people whose business is
- selling copies of user-supported and public domain software. It is also good
- for some user groups.
-
- We make no restriction on how much people charge for copies of our
- diskette. They provide a valuable service to us! Remember, shareware is
- primarily a distribution and promotion method. Distribution is key!
- [shareware is also a marketing hack...].
-
- I don't think magazine reviews are based on advertising. We have had
- quite a few great reviews, and no advertising (yet - we will start soon).
- We do send free copies in a press kit to a couple hundred people at magazines,
- twice a year or so.
-
- Our initial screen is the most important promotional piece we have - it
- lists all the benefits of registration, and our address and phone number. We
- take credit card orders. Shareware, phone ordering, copyable software, help
- screens, better manuals, and so on MAKE SOFTWARE EASIER TO ACQUIRE AND USE.
-
- Have to go! (there's never any time in a small company!)
