- Dear Nelson:
-
- Last night at our local user group meeting I showed your diskette list and got
- a tremendous response. I have enclosed 7 diskettes formatted with 2.0, 9
- sectors and a check for $14.00 for disks to add to our library. I also got a
- chance to inform the group about some of the discussions that have been going
- on over shareware. Most of them had the mistaken opinion that most shareware
- authors were getting rich already without their help. I think they now have a
- little more appreciation for our status.
-
- As I mentioned in the user guide I was about to try advertising. Well I did and
- it was a total failure. I'll fill you in on all the details so that others can
- be spared the expense and trouble. While visiting my folks over Christmas I was
- convinced by my father that the place to try advertising was in the Wall Street
- Journal classified ad section. I was very, very sceptical from the start, but
- his reasoning was as follows: Many business computer users don't read the
- computer magazines, businessmen need presentation graphics, the ad cost was low
- compared to a computer magazine, response would be immediate, and he had bought
- items by mail from the classified. The convincing argument was a bet we made
- that he would cover the loss, if there was one, and I would give him a
- percentage of sales above the cost. Last week the ad appeared three days in a
- row with my phone number. For three days I sat and waited, but did not get a
- single call, not one! Now if you think it was a dumb place to put the ad in the
- first place, your right. Needless to say I have stopped taking my fathers
- advise on computer related matters. Hopefully this information will stop others
- from making the same mistake.
-
- And here is one more method to add to the list of ways to get users to pay. Add
- a subliminal message to the program, such as "Please register this program" or
- "Send money to OEDWARE". The idea for the method comes from the latest PC
- magazine and may have questionable legal and moral ramifications. I have no
- idea if it would work, but it might be worth a try. It might be a good idea to
- not let potential users know about the message before hand or maybe we should
- be very up front with it? Its something worth considering.
-
- I have include this letter on the disk with the label, in case you want to use
- any of it. I am looking forward to Guide 2. Keep up the good work.
-
- Sincerely,
-
-
