  16.           DESCRIPTION
  17.                The System Monitor or ssssmmmmoooonnnn background process, described in
  18.                the _O_R_A_C_L_E _D_a_t_a_b_a_s_e _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e, is used to per-
  19.                form instance recovery.  It is used at instance startup and
  20.                performs recovery for failed CPUs in shared disk systems.
  21.                The ssssmmmmoooonnnn process is also responsible for cleaning up tem-
  22.                porary segments that are no longer used, and for recovering
  23.                dead transactions skipped during crash and instance recovery
  24.                because of file-read or offline errors.  It recovers these
  25.                transactions when the tablespace or file is brought back
  26.                online.  The System Monitor process "wakes up" regularly to
  27.                check whether it is needed, and can be called if another
  28.                process needs it.
