- Information Access Launches Magazine Rack(tm) CD-ROM for PC End-Users
-
- Foster City, CA, April 25, 1991 - Information Access Company today introduced an
- innovative new CD-ROM product targeted at PC end-users in home, business, and
- educational settings.
-
- Called Magazine Rack, the new CD-ROM features full-text articles from more than
- 300 magazines and other periodicals. With over 100,000 articles organized into
- four areas of coverage - general interest, business, health, and computers -
- Magazine Rack addresses a wide range of personal, business, and educational
- information needs.
-
- The initial Magazine Rack disc includes the January through December 1990 issues
- for most covered magazines. Among the magazines on disc are U.S. News & World
- Report, Inc., The Economist, Stereo Review, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Car
- & Driver, Runner's World, The Edell Health Letter, Home Office Computing, and
- PC/Computing.
-
- Magazine Rack, designed for use with IBM-compatible computers equipped with a
- CD-ROM drive, is based on Folio Corporation's PreVIEWS(r) search and retrieval
- software. Folio PreVIEWS features basic and advanced search methods, pull-down
- menus, mouse support, hypertext links, and cut-&-paste operations. Folio
- PreVIEWS also supports text decompression on-the-fly, permitting the Magazine
- Rack disc to contain over 825 megabytes of full-text plus a complete full-text
- index - well in excess of the normal 650 megabyte limit for CD-ROM's.
-
- Magazine Rack's introductory suggested list price for a single disc is $89.95.
- The product is available now through the Bureau of Electronic Publishing
- (800-828-4766) and Sony Electronic Publishing (408-372-6579). Update and
- subscription programs will be announced this summer.
-
- According to Gary Ellis, Manager of Channel Development at Information Access
- Company, Magazine Rack is probably the first true mass-market CD-ROM product:
- "Magazine Rack combines three important elements to appeal to a wide audience -
- broadly relevant content, ease-of-use, and affordability. Other CD-ROM titles
- may have had one or two of these elements, but rarely - if ever - all three in
- combination.
-
- "We believe Magazine Rack is exciting from several perspectives," says Ellis.
- "For the end-user, it's a unique and versatile information tool. It fully
- exploits the capability of CD-ROM to bring an enormous amount of information to
- the user's desktop - information that will be useful at home, in the office, and
- in school. For magazine publishers, Magazine Rack is a vehicle to generate
- interest in their publications and to reach new readership. From the perspective
- of the CD-ROM industry, Magazine Rack represents a departure from traditional
- packaging and pricing - and it will hopefully contribute to wider acceptance of
- CD-ROM technology."
-
- Applications
-
- Because of its extensive content, Magazine Rack will meet a variety of
- information needs - and save users a considerable amount of time and effort
- compared to traditional research methods.
-
- Users can turn to the General Interest section in Magazine Rack, for example, to
- find information on consumer products; book, movie and theatre reviews; new
- stories on current events; articles on music, fashion, food, and wine; and many
- other topics of interest to the consumer.
-
- The Business & Industry section in Magazine Rack features comprehensive coverage
- of both general business and industry-specific topics. For information and
- background on companies, products, technologies, trends, mergers/acquisitions,
- business people in the news, and a host of other business-related topics, the
- Business & Industry section is an exceptionally rich source.
-
- Magazine Rack's Health & Fitness section will answer questions for everyone
- interested in their health and the health of family anf friends: how to stay
- fit; the latest news on medications, drugs, and teir side-effects; new medical
- procedures and tests; diseases and their symptoms and treatment; nutrition and
- dieting; sports medicine; and many other consumer health issues.
-
- Finally, Magazine Rack's Computers section is designed especially for the
- individual and home-office PC end-user. This section features valuable "how-to"
- and tutorial articles as well as product reviews and evaluations.
-
- How Magazine Rack Works
-
- Magazine Rack features a simple series of menus that guides the user through the
- searching process. Instructions are always on screen and a complete users manual
- is available by simply pressing the Help Key. Experienced users may completely
- by-pass the menus if they wish.
-
- Magazine Rack supports searching by keyword (words in article titles and other
- key fields), article subject, article type, author, product name, company name,
- publication date, and publication name. Each of these search methods can be used
- alone or in combination. In addition, Magazine Rack supports full-text searching
- (every word in every article is examined). "Boolean" operators (and, or, not)
- can be used with any search method.
-
- To conduct a search, the user first selects the section of interest - General
- Interest, Business & Industry, Health & Fitness, or Computers - and the desired
- search method. The user then types the word or words of interest. Within
- seconds, Magazine Rack will examine tens of thousands of articles to find
- matches with the user's search words.
-
- After the user completes a search, the relevant articles can be viewed on
- screen, printed, or copied to a DOS file. Magazine Rack also supports a unique
- "quick-search" capability. When viewing an article on-screen, the user can
- highlight any word or words in the text and immediately conduct a search for
- other references to these words. This quick-search capability is like having a
- hypertext "button" on every word in every article.
-
- Magazine Rack is designed for use with PC-compatible computers equipped with a
- CD-ROM drive, MS-DOS 3.1 or higher, Microsoft MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX)
- version 2.1 or higher, and 640K bytes of RAM. A 10MHz or faster processor, color
- display, mouse, and expanded memory are recommended. Magazine Rack is also fully
- compatible with Folio Corporation's VIEWS infobase managament software.

- more delivery and distribution options than any company in the information
