  1. At Seybold Seminars '92, Aldus Corporation announced that in a show of
  2. growing support for the new Aldus Additions technology, nine third-party
  3. developers have recently announced or shipped Additions for Aldus
  4. PageMaker 4.2 for the Macintosh. Aldus Additions enable users and
  5. third-party developers to tailor PageMaker 4.2 to meet specific publishing
  6. needs.

  8. "The response to our Additions technology has been tremendous." said David
  9. Cloutier, third-party marketing manager. There are over 50 third-party
  10. developers who have Additions under way, and we've sent over 250 Additions
  11. Developer Toolkits to others who have expressed interest in working with
  12. the technology. This is a great testimony to the popularity of
  13. Additions."

  17. ∙ Articulate Systems Inc.--"Voice Navigator II," an Addition that allows
  18. PageMaker customers to use spoken commands to execute any function

  22. ∙ Compumation Inc.--"BureauExpress PM," which enables users to compress
  23. PageMaker publications and automatically send them to local service
  24. bureaus that support BureauMaster, all without quitting PageMaker.

  27. ∙ EDCO Services Inc.--"PMproKit," a collection of Additions for creative
  28. professionals; the kit includes Kerning, Type Distortion, Pica Gauge,

  31. ∙ Equilibnum--"Rotate This!," an Addition that rotates placed bitmap
  32. graphics to any degree; and "Import That!," which enables users to import
  33. graphics in a wide variety of non-Macintosh file formats that PageMaker

  36. ∙ Fast Electronic "Screen Machine," which allows PageMaker users to

  44. ∙ Scitex America Corporation--"Scitex Visionary/A," a set of Additions for
  45. creating color blends with up to 12 different colors, in linear or radial
  46. orientation, from within PageMaker, it also provides enhanced grid

  50. ∙ TRUMATCH--"TRUMATCH 4-Color Selector," an Addition that enables users to
  51. choose digitally accurate, on-press colors by TRUMATCH number within

  54. ∙ Zephyr Design--"Zephyr Palettes for PageMaker," which features seven
  55. customizable floating palettes, including fonts, font size, and tracking

  58. These Additions are loadable modules and will be added to PageMaker's menu
  59. choices once they're copied to the proper folder on a Macintosh. Some may
  60. require additional hardware and software.

  62. There are three kinds of Additions: user-written scripts, which use
  63. text-based commands to automate routine tasks normally carried out with
  64. the keyboard and mouse; loadable modules, which combine commands and
  65. queries written in the C programming language; and standalone
  66. applications, which can be used to make other programs such as Microsoft
  67. Excel or Claris HyperCard interact with PageMaker using Dynamic Data
  68. Exchange or interapplication communication.

  70. PageMaker 4.2 itself is shipped with six loadable Additions: "Balance
  71. columns" to evenly distribute text among columns; "Drop cap" to embed a
  72. large character at the beginning of a paragraph; "Make booklet" for
  73. preparing simple "two-up" signatures for proper pagination after printing
  74. and folding; "Display pub info" to review the linked files, fonts, and
  75. styles used in a publication; "Run script" for executing Addition scripts
  76. users write; and "Sort pages" so users can display thumbnail images of the
  77. pages in a publication and reorder them by dragging their images.
