- Personally, I don't think that AIDS is a punishment for sin
- any more than I think that lightning is a punishment for sin. The
- latter viewpoint was expounded by a leading clergyman in colonial
- America when Boston suffered a big earthquake. He explained that the
- people of Boston had been putting up lightning rods and defusing God's
- wrath. Thus, God had to find some other way to punish them. He
- evidently thought that putting up a lightning rod was essentially
- thumbing one's nose at God.
