  12. This has become, essentially, yet another item in the the
  13. perennial welfare argument, and no longer belongs in the
  14. present newsgroups -- in my opinion.  Carole's story is
  15. valid if the welfare queen myth has truth in it, and not 
  16. otherwise.

  18. My basic contention has been that there are alternatives to
  19. individual responsibility for fatherhood (or other
  20. contributions to the results of reproductive behavior)
  21. besides dumping the whole burden on those who happen to have
  22. female bodies and aren't quick enough on the uptake to get
  23. an immediate abortion unless they have in hand an armor-
  24. plated contract from someone to support the outcome.
  25. Hillel thinks that would mean we would all start breeding off 
  26. the bottom and collapse socially.  I suggest we agree to
  27. disagree until the next great talk.politics.* welfare circus
  28. comes to town.

  30. I've also taken exception to the way in which the issue of
  31. paternal responsibility has been discussed -- very largely
  32. without any concern for the well-being of the possible 
  33. children involved or the community as a whole.  This is a
  34. criticism of all ideological positions, _pace_ Will Steeves.

  36. In fact, I think it's more of a criticism of feminists,
  37. since I expect them to be intelligent and perceptive,
  38. especially about social issues -- much more than I do their
  39. opponents.  In fact, it's been my disappointment with the
  40. feminist contributions that got me into this thread.
