  19. Police radars only measure as accurately as they are (a) calibrated,
  20. and (b) used properly.

  22. Doppler radar devices do usually indicate a speed slightly lower than
  23. actual, but for a different reason.  Indicated speed is the actual
  24. speed, times the cosine of the angle formed by the velocity vector of
  25. the target (ie, straight ahead), and the line from the target to the
  26. cop.  Only if the cop is standing directly in front of the car is this
  27. angle 0, thus indicated = actual.  For greater offset angles, the
  28. cosine drops off, and indicated < actual.  The limit is at 90 degress,
  29. when the auto is moving past the cop with no component of its velocity
  30. towards or away from him.  In this case, cos(90) = 0, which is the
  31. indicated speed, regardless of actual speed.

  33. None of this particularly helps in court, however, since it says that
  34. at best, the cop recorded your actual speed, and in reality, you were
  35. probably going faster!
