-
- Hmmmm, buying a cheap fare with an advance purchase requirement
- and then calling it price gouging seems a bit unrealistic
- wouldn't you think?
-
- The airlines sell those cheap fares with advance purchase
- requirements to get additional business and to plan load
- capacity in advance.
-
- The closer to flight time you have to change your flight plans,
- the more you pay for a given trip.
-
- This really gouges business travellers to subsidize vacation
- travellers.
-
- What would you really want the airline to do? If they offered
- to just totally refund the original fare and let your friend
- buy a FULL fare ticket would that make you any happier?
-
- Note that they aren't even required to refund that lower
- excursion fare...but they certainly COULD make your friend
- pay full fare unless their published rate schedule makes other
- arrangements.
-
- In truth, Continental gave your friend a break...which is what
- the travel agents are probably politely trying to say.....

- The bankruptcy court is there to protect the Continental
- creditors. Their most likely action would be to send your
- friend a bill for the difference between the published fare
- and the fare Continental gave her.
- The Better Business Bureau might just explain the sad facts of
- life.
-
- The FAA though might be interested....the entire issue of fare's
- is pretty much a sore point. However the biggest complainers
- are businesses with lotsa travellers and thus lotsa bucks
- involved in the current fares which always penalize late-travel
- changes.
