- :I am looking for a source for good, reasonabley priced, "lunchbox" style
- :portable computers. In fact a source for the lunchbox style cases that will
- :accept a standard baby-at motherboard would be nice.
-
- I built a 486-33 system in a case that says PC-III on it. It has
- a built-in 10in LCD display and accepts a standard motherboard.
- I have an Adaptec 1542 SCSI adapter, Racal Interlan NI-6510
- ethernet, 32MB of RAM, an 877MB Toshiba hard drive, 5.25 and 3.5
- in floppies. It will boot SCO ODT, Xenix, or DOS.
-
- Now for the bad part. The case is pricey, as I understand it
- because of the duties on the LCD display. The overall cost was
- about $500 higher than a desktop with color VGA monitor would
- have been. The LCD display died once requiring a trip back under
- warranty for replacement. I understand that these have a plasma
- display that's considerably more reliable than the LCD. The
- system is back in for warranty repair for a failed power supply.
-
- Another thing I don't like about this system is that the VGA card
- is fine for the LCD, but isn't very good when attached to an
- external monitor (I would much prefer an ATI Ultra :-). The
- keyboard is OK if you're a DOSoid, but the '/' key is off in
- right field somewhere. I generally carry another keyboard with
- me to use with this machine.
-
- In summary, I wouldn't use this system if I didn't have to travel
- quite a bit and take it to customer sites. It has proven
- invaluable for that though so I put up with its shortcomings.
