- This may have been discussed already, but I don't normally read this group
- and I couldn't find anything relevant in the articles that were still online.
-
- I recently acquired an internal (PC) Zoom 14400 bps fax modem (don't remember
- the exact type number now).
-
- I'm having difficulties making it talk to certain plain 2400 bps (no protocol)
- modems. As far as I can tell (though my attempts may not be statistically
- relevant yet) I have little trouble talking to V.32bis modems at 14400; dialing
- e.g. CompuServe and letting the modems negotiate gives me a good 9600 bps
- V.42 connection most of the time (though often enough, the modems end up
- negotiating 4800 bps, and drop the line after half a minute or so, with
- no data transfer taking place).
-
- However, I have great difficulties with plain 2400 (forcing the Zoom only to
- accept 2400 with no protocol). There's one BBS I often call which only supports
- 2400, and I have yet to get a usable connection (I have no problems with my old
- external 2400 bps only modem). The modems do connect, but there's so much garbage
- in *receive* direction that the connection is unusable. The transmit direction
- seems more or less ok; if I type something, the other side sees it (and any
- resulting output is nicely spread among the garbage I receive, in a ratio of
- 10:1 of garbage:text).
-
- I can sometimes get a reasonable 2400 bps connection to other places, but
- never one I would call good (I had virtually error-free sessions of several
- hours with the old external modem).
-
- FWIW, the modem is now configured as COM3, but with IRQ5. There's no LPT1
- in the machine. I've also tried the modem as COM1 with nothing else installed,
- but it makes no difference, so I don't think it's a PC configuration
- problem.
-
- Any help appreciated!
