  16. But stratification works fine in any case (well, I don't mean it has no
  17. costs, but it does work).
  18. Thus, if you don't reify the predicate, you need to stratify. And if you
  19. do reify the predicate, you need to stratify. Or perhaps there is some
  20. other strategy. But so far, it looks as though all the strategies work
  21. equally for reified and unreified predicates.

  23. I'm not sure I agree, by the way, that a predicate is meaningful if and
  24. only if it expresses a property.

  26. I can think of a couple of types of example. For one, one might agree
  27. that a predicate is meaningful even though one thinks it should be
  28. paraphrased out in a good, logical language. I suppose "yummy" might be
  29. like that.

  31. For another, I suspect that there are some predicates that are
  32. indexicals. "Occurred yesterday" might be such a predicate. (I believe
  33. that it is.) Of course, I would agree that on any occasion of use,
  34. "occurred yesterday" DOES express a property. So perhaps that isn't a
  35. counterexample at all. But it expresses different properties on
  36. different occasions.

  38. Hm. Those are the only kinds of examples I can think of.
  39. (And it's possible that the "expressivist" predicates, like
  40. "yummy," are best thought of as indexicals, too....)
