- The top allied ace in the ETO drove a Thunderbolt. It was the diving
- champion of WWII. Nothing could dive with it, or away from it. In it's
- later varients, it was also the climbing champ, easily surpassing the
- Spitfire. A huge engine with wings, the P-47 could rightly be called
- a flying tank. It could take incredible punishment and keep flying.
- It's primary role, however, was not as a bomber interceptor, but as
- a bomber escort fighter. It's heavy armor and armament also made it
- a good ground attack aircraft. When it encountered aircraft at medium
- altitudes, the tactic was to rapidly pounce using it's superior diving
- and climbing ability rather than staying level and engaging in a turning
- contest.
