- No, for a lot of reasons.

- The big strike against S-VHS as a rental format is that it's incompatible with
- VHS. I.e., S-VHS tapes won't play in VHS VCR's (except for the new
- "quasi-S-VHS" VCRs). Thus, video rental places are faced with the prospect of
- stocking duplicate inventory, to satisfy a relatively small group of S-VHS
- customers. They've (mostly) just finished getting rid of their Beta
- inventory, and aren't eager to stock yet another format. For the same reason,
- you don't see many rentals in 8mm or Hi-8. By contrast, improvements like
- hi-fi sound caught on, because new media were compatible with old players, so
- there was no reason not to upgrade to the new features.
-
- LaserDiscs have caught on, but many of the places around here are laser-only
- stores, which have discs and players. The videotape rental places are getting
- into the business more slowly. Laser's obvious advantage as a rental medium
- (i.e., no wear on the medium itself) are presumably helping the process.
