- Because it believes sharks are being taken at unsustainable levels,
- the US national Marine Fisheries Service has imposed quotas on the
- taking of sharks within 200 miles of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.
-
- A total quota of 2436 metric tons in 1993 and 2570 metric tonnes in 1994,
- dressed weight has been placed on large coastal sharks. 22 shark species
- are in this category including Dusky, Bull, Tiger, Lemon, Sand Tiger, Nurse,
- Whale and Great White Sharks. In the last 5 years the catch of these
- sharks has substantially exceeded 4,000 metric tonnes.
-
- The Fisheries Service believe this limits will allow these sharks to recover
- and that a sustainable take of 3800 metric tonnes will be possible from 1995 on.
- Conservationist are sceptical that this take is sustainable.
-
- A quota of 580 metric tonnes will apply to pelagic sharks in both years.
- Included in this category are Thresher, Blue and Makos.
-
- A daily limit of sharks per boat, large coastal and pelagic species combined
- has been imposed on recreational fisherman. Conservationist say this limit is
- useless as few boats take more than 4 sharks in a day.
-
- Finning - removing a shark's fins and dumping the live helpless body -
- has been banned.
