-
- If there are 2 possibilities to an issue (e.g. 2 doors as in this case)
- it is not necessarily true that they are equally _probable_. Monty
- doesn't just show _a_ door, he uses his knowledge of what's behind each
- door to show you a _wrong_ door, _after_ he has seen your initial choice.
- Therefore, the third door is in some sense related to the one you initially
- chose -- it is one of the 2 _remaining_ doors such that the _other_ one
- was known, and then shown, to be a wrong door by Monty. Yea, I know this is
- a lousy way to explain it but I hope you get the point.
-
- Matters would have been quite different however, if the problem were as
- follows : Suppose you have 3 doors. Monty knows what's behind each door,
- and he opens a wrong door. _Then_, from the 2 remaining doors, you first
- pick one -- and then Monty allows you the option of staying or switching.
- In this case, obviously, your first reasoning is correct, and it's a
- wash whether you stay or switch.
