- I made one mistake in buying my Ruger "Old Army" cap & ball revolver:
- I got blue steel rather than stainless. Now every time I take it out
- it has to be cleaned scrupulously or severe rusting will be my reward.
- I've been shooting only Pyrodex and RWS caps and, if rust is the price
- of using Pyrodex, I'm about ready to do without. Now the manual that
- came with the gun says "Black powder only" and Ruger amended this by
- letter to include Pyrodex. I'm half-way tempted to use a few grains
- of Unique, warning or not. I'm not sure what to do.
-
- Does Pyrodex cause this rust or is it the caps? Are there ways to get
- around the rusting? Is there a black-powder substitute that works like
- smokeless powder? Advice & opinions appreciated.

- [MODERATOR: I don't think I'd recommend throwing in any Unique ... I
- have no experiences along those lines, but it doesn't sound prudent to
- me. For what its worth. Anyway, I just want to add a request that
- those of you who answer Donald's post might also comment in general on
- the interchangeability of black powder and pyrodex. Santa Claus brought
