- I have been playing with a Sony MZ-1 (MD recorder) for a while now.
- I like the unit very much, including the sound quality. But I have
- a question for anyone out there who has some experience or access to
- one of these.
-
- When doing analog recording (via analog line from a CD player), I
- have noticed a slight modulated tone at a very low level (up and
- down wavering tone). You can hear it in the playback if you turn up
- the volume all the way between songs from a CD (i.e. quiet) source.
- It is mostly in the left ear, but a lower tone can be heard in the
- right. The wavering (modulation) of the tone's frequency seems to
- be in sync with the dimming and brightening of the LCD display
- while recording (you can hear it through the headphones while
- recording as well). I can hear it while recording with nothing
- plugged into the input jack as well.
-
- My theory is that there is some kind of cross-talk between the
- power supply and the A/D converter (perhaps the left channel HW
- is closer to the source). As far as the bright-and-dim flucuations
- of the LCD back-light: maybe this is due to the periodic activation
- of the writing laser.
-
- Any info from others out there would be appreciated. I'd love
- to know whether these bahaviors are normal for the unit or
- not.
-
- I am being a bit anal here (the interference I hear is not
- really detectable when actual music is present!).
