- The last time I recertified (about 1 1/2 years ago), the instructors had a
- state trooper come in and talk to us about motor vehicle laws as they relate to
- EMS. He didn't know the exact rules about running emergency lights on POVs, so
- he looked them up and read them to us. In NC you can pretty much run whatever
- your alternater will handle, as long as it's not blue (blue is reserved for law
- enforcement) and you don't create a hazard. It has been my experience that none
- of the law enforcent officers to whom I have spoken about running emergency
- traffic in a POV have known off the tops of their heads exactly what the law
- is. It seems to me that the way the law is enforced is, for practical
- purposes, the important question. My experience is that as long as you drive
- sanely and don't us blue lights, the police are happy to have you out there and
- will go out of their way to help you to do your job.
-
- The only exception that I know of is inside the Charlotte city limits. As I
- understand it, the CPD will not allow POV emergency traffic, except in very
- limited circumstances. (e. g. I hear that Mecklenburg County EMS's new medical
- director has a red light and siren in his car and gets away with using it). I
- assume that there is some type of city ordanance, but I don't know that for
- sure, nor do I know the specifics.
