- BK=>We have had an increasing number of rather bizarre accidents over
- the last
- BK=>months. They involve children with injuries of various severity
- from havin
- BK=>televisions falling on them, usually their heads. Apparently the
- child is
-
- I don't think it's as strange as it sounds. Newer TV's have all their
- weight in the picture tube. The rest of the components are basically
- lightweight. Since the shape of the picture tube is an upright
- rectangular box resting on a much thinner side, the TV's have a natural
- tendency to fall forward, screen side down, if any weight is placed on
- the upper edge of the front. Try (carefully) picking up a 19" set, and
- this becomes obvious. Plus, TV's are often placed with the front edge
- of
- the set at, or overhanging their stand or shelf. Finally, most newer
- TV's have an indentation in their case beneath the screen, where there
- are controls, just like many monitors, thereby undercutting some of
- the case's support for the heavy tube....
-
- Kids often watch TV while sitting on the floor, in front of the set. If
- another child gets up and happens to lean on the top edge of the set
- (and kids, who are still learning to balance do this a lot!), the set
- may land on the child on the floor. Or, on the child leaning on it,
- especially if the set is tall, near the limit of the child's reach.
- The bigger the screen on the set, the taller and thinner the case, and
- the greater the instability of the shape.
-
- I had a firsthand demonstration of just how easy it is to tip over a
- set
- last week when I helped my mother with her new 20" MTS set. MTS means
- the set can receive stereo and has stereo speakers on either side of
- the
- picture tube. I had no problem with her old (circa 197X) set (except
- for
- the weight!), but I almost tipped the new one over twice when I was
- setting it up by leaning on the top front edge while connecting the
- leads in the back. The additional weight of the speakers in the front
- make it even "tippier" than a normal set.
-
- IMHO, it would be wise for parents to make sure that the set is set
- back
- several inches from the edge of the stand, and that little kids not be
- left alone sitting on the floor in front of it!
