  25. General Ortega Calls for Neutralizing of Armed Groups in Nicaragua

  27. General Humberto Ortega, head of the Nicarguan Army, announced on
  28. Dec. 22 that the army is preparing to "neutralize" former contras
  29. and Sandinistas who are still armed or who have taken up weapons
  30. again, following the killing of a peasant family which was
  31. presumed to have been done by a rearmed group.

  33. According to official sources there are still about 400 armed
  34. people who live in as criminals in the countryside, especially in
  35. the northern part of the country. Ortega met with Cardinal Obando
  36. y Bravo and with national agricultural business people to discuss
  37. their needs in terms of the army's operations. Ortega told the
  38. press that 1993 was vital for the country's interests and called
  39. for a national concertation. He also asked for greater
  40. consciousness toward the most economically desperate and seriously
  41. affected sectors of the society, and asked President Chamorro to
  42. develop programs for the peasanst, many of whom have joined the
