  24. Panama Observes Third Anniversary of US Invasion
  25.  
  26. The third anniversary of the US invasion of Panama, which took
  27. place in December, 1989, was observed by a mass in front of the
  28. common grave of 108 military and civilian victims of the invasion.
  29. Hundreds of people who had lived in the El Chorrillo neighborhood
  30. in Panama City, the area most damaged by the invasion, were left
  31. homeless. They attended a mass in the Church of Fatima and had a
  32. vigil and procession with candles and torches on Dec. 19.

  34. According to the Panamanian and US governments, over 500 people
  35. were killed as a result of the invasion. [Other sources place the
  36. figure much higher. See the film "The Panama Deception," among
  37. other sources.] According to this AP story appearing in el
  38. diario/La Prensa, some 2,722 families were affected by the bombing
  39. of the Central Headquarters, the main offices of defeated General
  40. Manuel Noriega. The Church said that although Panama is living in
  41. "democracy and freedom" and if 2,135 families have been given
  42. homes, there are still families of victims who have not been
  43. indemnified and others who have not been compensated for the
