- Panama Observes Third Anniversary of US Invasion
-
- The third anniversary of the US invasion of Panama, which took
- place in December, 1989, was observed by a mass in front of the
- common grave of 108 military and civilian victims of the invasion.
- Hundreds of people who had lived in the El Chorrillo neighborhood
- in Panama City, the area most damaged by the invasion, were left
- homeless. They attended a mass in the Church of Fatima and had a
- vigil and procession with candles and torches on Dec. 19.
-
- According to the Panamanian and US governments, over 500 people
- were killed as a result of the invasion. [Other sources place the
- figure much higher. See the film "The Panama Deception," among
- other sources.] According to this AP story appearing in el
- diario/La Prensa, some 2,722 families were affected by the bombing
- of the Central Headquarters, the main offices of defeated General
- Manuel Noriega. The Church said that although Panama is living in
- "democracy and freedom" and if 2,135 families have been given
- homes, there are still families of victims who have not been
- indemnified and others who have not been compensated for the
- damaged done to their homes. (edlp 12/21/92 from AP)
