- Thanks to those who responded to my request.
-
- The problem: I have chapter titles whose text is used in running heads.
- I wanted a registered trademark in the chapter title, but
- not in the running heads.
-
- Here is what I found out:
-
- First of all, I was using the Symbol font registered trademark. Several
- people kindly pointed out that the regular character set contained a
- circle-R (CTRL q ( ). So I used that character instead.
-
- Second, there is no straight-forward way to supress the circle-R in the
- head if it is in the chapter title. However, one person suggested the
- following solution, using anchored frames:
-
- From ask@SEI.CMU.EDU (Alan Koch)
-
- > I see no way to get the circle-R into the running Header/Footer.
- > But here's how you can exclude it.
- >

- > say, 400% and use Ctl-[up|down|left|right]-arrow to allign it properly.
- >
- > The Running header/Footer variable will omit the anchored frame.
-
- Another suggestion was as follows:
-
- From nigelh@csr.UVic.CA (Nigel Horspool)
-
- > The `registered' symbol (R enclosed in a circle) should give
- > you no trouble because it is available in the regular fonts
- > as well as the Symbol font. On my Mac, `option-R' in the
- > Helvetica font works fine.
-
- And this is the last response I received:
-
- From karen@yc.estec.esa.nl

-
-
- Here is the solution I finally decided upon (given time constraints):
-
- Use the regular font circle-R in the Chapter titles
- Hardcode the running head instead of picking up the chapter
- title (draw-back: now the running head does not automatically
- pick up changes to the title, but the book is final, anyway).
- Delete the circle-R from the table of contents by hand (I have
- some other manual editing of the TOC I have to do anyway).
-
- I liked Alan's idea, but did not have time to do it this time around.
- Thanks to everyone who responded!
