- OK Looks like I am one of the few with the Thinkpad 700C so here are
- my thoughts again/so far:
-
- 1) I love the active matrix screen it is definitely worth the $1000 for it.
-
- 2) Construction is good except the stupid modem slot door snags on stuff and
- open from time to time.
-
- 3) Speed is good as noted it is a 25 MHz 486 integer unit with 16kb cache
- I have installed a 387SL (25 MHz) myself and it is very easy to do.
- I think the 486SLC has a 16bit datapath...
-
- 4) Trackpoint II is good, but I use a mouse at my desk. but when I am
- porting it around I just use the trackpoint. It takes a hour or so to
- get good at using it.
-
- 5) It is not light 8 lb + stuff, but I have no problem with it.
-
- 6) Battery life is shortish 2-3 hours max. I average around 2.5.
-
- 7) Upgraded the RAM to 12Mb myself got it at tote-a-lap : 8Mb IC RAM card
- $345 vs $900 at IBM.
-
- 8) Support is great except they do not support MS windows (suprise!). You
- can call 1-800 number anytime and they are pretty good about looking
- things up for you.
-
- I use the 700C about 3 hours or more a day and do tote it around every week.
- I am very happy with it except as with all computers I wish it is faster...
-
- I also heard a rumor about IBM putting in a PCMCIA slot instead of the
- current modem thing, so that should delay the shipping date to march 93
- timeframe. As I understand it I got one of the few original ones and there
- were not too many made before they decided to change to the PCMCIA. This is
- the reason for their scarcity. Well If anyone has anymore question
- please send me e-mail or post something. Hope this helps...
-
- BTW I have 1 of the 2 at MIT.
