- Summary: source of Plot3D data format

- The Plot3D data format pre-dates FAST by quite a bit. The name comes
- from a visualization package, Plot3D, written quite a long time ago
- (mid 1970's?). It started life as a command line oriented program
- running on a Vax, for exploring CFD simulation data. It was written
- by a CFD scientist named Pieter Bu"ning, here at NASA Ames. It has
- been ported to SGI's and many other platforms, and updated with new
- features, but is still basically command oriented. I believe it is
- still available through COSMIC, the standard NASA distribution
- channel. I'm not sure whether he defined the format specifically for
- the visualization program or he adopted a format already coming from a
- CFD code, but I'm certain of the source of the NAME. Pieter's office
- is just down the hall; he is one of the people we graphics folks check
- with to see whether some new visualization actually shows anything of
- scientific interest.
