  17. I began by not knowing why anyone with Internet access would diddle with
  18. Fido, and for certain I know not why anyone on any occasion would
  19. read-only Fido echos.  It ain't exactly the Library of Congress, and
  20. late in my Fido incarnation I found I was only posting and looking for
  21. answers regarding the myriads of utilities necessary to mask netmail and
  22. echos as mail and news.  When I dropped Fido, life simplified.

  24. In any event, we're talking of expense here, and the boss node has only
  25. a share of the echo pool, and the charges everywhere are greater for
  26. incoming than outgoing.  The world is funneled through the net into your
  27. node, while the most active board in Lima, Ohio, will put out only a
  28. small percentage of what comes in.

  30. In the two nets I was involved with over time, there was attention paid
  31. strictly to incoming accounting, whereas the outgoing was minimal (even
  32. in San Jose, CA) comparatively and in one case was simply born by our
  33. Net Echo Coordinator.

  35. Points were generally discouraged, anyway, and were seen mostly as a
  36. means of bringing some kid up to speed who just saw his first modem
  37. yesterday...

  43. There ain't no Nielson system to monitor users, so attention generally
  44. is paid whenever the mail moves over the lines.
