- 1. >Survey finds S'pore managers among top earners<
-
- (ST 27 Dec) According to an international survey of managerial
- salaries by Employment Conditions Abroad Ltd (ECA), a non-profit
- group that provides information on salary costs to its 700 member
- companies operating in 150 countries, Singaporean managers are
- rated fourth out of 24 countries surveyed when their net salaries
- were adjusted according to the cost of living in Australia.
-
- A first-level senior manager in Singapore earned a gross salary
- of A$100 893 compared to an Australian's A$74 285, a German's
- $154 491 and a Briton's A$93 989. These were then adjusted for
- the survey according to tax deductions and costs of living, using
- the costs of living in Australia as a base. The net cost-of-
- living adjusted of a junior manager in Singapore was found to be
- A$46 401 and A$131 877 for the senior manager. This compares
- favourably with A$49 866 for the junior and A$116 178 for the
- senior manager in the US; A$40 774 for the junior and A$89 579
- for the senior manager in Britain.

- 2. >Visiting architect rates buildings here<
-
- (ST 27 Dec 1992) Mr Pual Andreu, the man who designed the Grand
- Arch of La Defense in Paris, a 100m-tall office building which
- has been called the 20th century Arc de Triomphe, was taken
- around the CBD and Orchard Road and these are some of his
- opinions on the Singaporean skyline:
-
- On the OCBC Centre:
- "I like it --- it has a simple but clear design. Most effective.
- Compared to its neighbours, it looks a bit older, but it has
- character".
-
- On the Gateway:
- "I am not sure I understand why this building is built like this.
- It is more modernist, and there is some sense of openness ...
- does it make a good office?"
-
- On the Octagon:
- "It might grab one's attention from afar, but close up there is
- not much to see."
-
-
- He also picked the Sinagpore River and City Hall as must-sees for
- tourists,"The area around the river speaks of different times and
- the different ways of living. It shows Singapore was not made
- in a day... You must keep Anderson Bridge. This is essential ---
- it adds atmosphere and character to the locale. The dense group
- of buildings and their relation with the open water and trees,
- even the food stalls along the riverside ... this is the heart
- of Singapore --- the mix of old and new."

- 3. >TNP shows off 3-D photos<
-
- (TNP 26 Dec) On Boxing day, every copy of TNP came with a pair
- of 3-D glasses and 3-D photos that "reaches out, grabs you, and
- makes you feel that you are in it". They are taken with a lens
- called the Q-Dos which can be attached to Canon, Olympus,
- Yashica, Nikon and Pentax cameras by means of a special mount.

- 4. >Java Jive to Unchained Melody<
-
- (TNP 26 Dec) Java Jive of Holland Village won 10% of the votes
- of 225 lounge-goers who were interviewed in a survey commissioned
- by TNP. JJ Mahoney of Tanjong Pagar was second and Taps was
- third in the poll. Almost half of the people interviewed said
- they visited karaoke lounges at least once a week. Three
- quarters said they would spend three hours or more at the lounge.
-
- 15% of those interviewed said they heard Unchained Melody most
- frequently in the lounges. Second was My Way by Frank Sinatra
- with 10% of the votes. Third was Eric Clapton's Wonderful
- Tonight with 5%. While people like Mr Robert Lee who says of
- Unchained Melody,"It is a very romantic song. It reminds me of
- how much I love my girlfriend," others like a waiter who declined
- to be named comments, " I grit my teeth every time I hear Right
- Here Waiting. I have heard it so often that I am sick to death
- of it." One man's drink is another man's poison!

- 5. >Fandi gets pay rise offer from Pahang<
-
- (TNP 26 Dec) Pahnag wants to keep Fandi Ahmad for another year
- and has offered a 50% pay rise which means a cool $15 000 a month
- for the 30 year-old striker. Said Fandi of this new offer, "It's
- a very good offer, though I don't know the full details yet. But
- I want to keep my options open for a few more weeks". TNP
- suggests that Fandi is perhaps still keen to come home to
- Singapore for good. The Football Association of Singapore is also
- keen to keep Fandi in the Singapore team after his tremendous
- performance in the Merlion Cup where he scored two of Singapore's
- five goals.
