-
- 1. NEW MINISTER OF STATE APPOINTED
-
- ST, 22 Dec - He's all set for a new political career after the
- by-elections. Former Navy chief Commodore Teo Chee Hean was sworn
- into office by President Wee Kim Wee as Minister of State for the
- ministries of Finance and Communications.
-
- 2. ARTS CENTRE DESIGN TEAM PICKED
-
- ST, 22 Dec - A team of Singaporean and British architects have
- been selected among four shortlisted to design the country's
- largest cultural project, the Singapore Arts Centre. DP
- Architects, of Singapore, and James Stirling, Michael Wilford and
- Associates from UK won the contract because of their flexibility,
- creativity and good working relationship. The Arts Centre will
- be built on a site in Marina Bay.
-
- 3. OPERATION PINK NABS 27 IN SWOOP
-
- TNP, 22 Dec - 27 suspects were arrested in a drug bust against
- a syndicate which is the largest drug supplier in Singapore. The
- police and the Central Narcotics Bureau collaborated in Operation
- Pink and seized 5 kg of heroin, supposedly "valued" at about $2
- million.
-
- The arrests incidentally foiled plans by some of the gang members
- to stage armed robberies to make up for the shipment of drugs
- lost during smuggling. A shipment was lost last month when a
- boatman panicked at the sight of a Marine police boat and dumped
- 6 kg of heroin into the Straits of Johore. Among those busted was
- a 27 year old Singaporean thought to be the mastermind. More
- arrests are expected.
-
- 4. END OF US RECESSION MEANS GOOD NEWS FOR SINGAPORE
-
- A Straits Times Survey (ST, 24 Dec) indicates that Singapore will
- gain from the US economic recovery in several ways. The US is
- Singapore;s largest market and orders fro Singapore-made goods
- are likely to grow. Trading activity on the Singapore bourse is
- expected to increase with the rise in exports. Americans are now
- in the sixth largest group of visitors to Singapore. The number
- is likely to grow by more than 15%. Moreover, the Singapore
- economy has grown 5.5% so far despite a sluggish US market. Even
- with weak growth in the US will benefit this country.
-
- 5. SDU, SDS & SPS TARGET AT PRIVATE SECTOR
-
- TNP, 22 Dec - Singapore Official matchmakers are certainly not
- letting up - the Social Development Unit, Social Development
- Section and the Social Promotion Section will begin their biggest
- ever membership drive, zooming straight for singles from more
- than 1000 companies come March. They hope to boost their
- membership (which stands at 13 000, 66 000, 20 000 members
- respectively) by 30%, by sending brochures and application forms
- to employers who may feel like passing them on their staff.
