  18. David's note to Raul suggests that we train TAs (I will accept any substitute
  19. for the word "train" anyone wants, including "confuse") either just before
  20. and/or during their first experience as teachers.  May I suggest the medical
  21. internship model?  First they learn what they are going to do and then they
  22. get trials at doing it under very close supervision.  We take undergraduates
  23. and put them into clinical practice with only marginal supervision, and almost
  24. none of that in the actual work situation, and expect th;em to cure more than
  25. they kill.  It is an unreasonable expectation.
