-
- DIGEST OF EDUCATION STATISTICS
- RELEASED BY U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
-
- College enrollment rose to a record 14.2 million students in
- fall 1991, despite continuing decreases in the population of
- 18- to 24-year-olds. This and other education-related
- figures are part of the new DIGEST OF EDUCATION STATISTICS,
- 1992, published by the U.S. Department of Education's
- National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
-
- In addition to updating many of the statistics that appeared
- in previous editions, the 1992 DIGEST contains data covering
- new areas, including: drug use by teenagers and young
- adults, characteristics of vocational education teachers,
- proportion of 17-year-olds taking various science courses,
- federal support for education by type of recipient, opinions
- of teachers about teacher training, and the number of
- students and teachers in urban, rural, and suburban areas:
-
- Among the other highlights:
-
- o Expenditures for public and private education, from
- preprimary through graduate school, are estimated to total
- $425 billion in 1991-92, up from $402 billion in 1990-91.
-
- o Public elementary enrollment rose from 27.0 million in fall
- 1985 to an estimated 30.4 million in fall 1991. Enrollment
- in the upper grades declined from 12.4 million to an
- estimated 11.5 million over the same period. The net result
- of these two trends was an overall increase in public school
- enrollment.
-
- o About 5.9 million students enrolled part-time in
- institutions of higher education in fall 1990, up 15 percent
- since 1985. This is a trend that is expected to continue as
- both nontraditional students, such as older women, and
- increasing numbers of high school graduates pursue higher
- education.
-
- o A 1991 international assessment of mathematics and science
- revealed the relatively low level of achievement of U.S.
- students, particularly older students. In the mathematics
- assessment, U.S. 9-year-olds scored below students in 5 of
- the 9 other countries assessed. In the mathematics
- assessment of 13-year-olds, 11 of 14 countries had average
- test scores higher than the U.S.
